For customers elsewhere in the UK, Aldi has reduced its Nature's Pick British Strawberries (227g) to 99p — a price 55% lower than comparable punnets at M&S. Aldi sold nearly 1,700 tonnes (4.5 million punnets) of strawberries during last year's Wimbledon fortnight and forecasts over five million punnets will be sold this year, according to the supermarket.

Health and variety

Strawberries are a healthy choice, rich in vitamin C and fibre. Aldi offers several options: Everyday Essentials Wonky Strawberries (£1.19, 227g), Nature's Pick British Strawberries (£1.99, 400g and £2.79, 600g), and Specially Selected British Grown Strawberries (£2.85, 400g).

Why strawberries are linked to Wimbledon

The tradition dates back to the first championship in 1877, when strawberries were a fashionable seasonal treat. The fruit is harvested from late June to mid-July. The custom of serving strawberries and cream is even older, traced to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey at the court of Henry VIII in 1509. Today, over 38 tons of handpicked berries from Hugh Lowe Farms are consumed during the tournament.
