CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski has warned that games created entirely using generative artificial intelligence are already in production, with a wave of such titles expected to hit the market soon. Speaking at DevGAMM Gdańsk in Poland, Nowakowski revealed that he personally knows of a studio founder who claims to be running a primarily AI-based operation, capable of producing 40 prototypes in a single week and launching a game within three weeks.
Rise of Generative AI in Gaming
The use of generative AI in game development has sparked controversy, with backlash against titles like Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7, Crimson Desert, and Sega's Crazy Taxi reboot. Despite negative reactions, some developers have adopted the technology for tasks such as creating temporary assets, voiceovers, or concept art, though these often end up in final products. Nowakowski expressed skepticism about the quality and sustainability of AI-generated games, stating, 'Maybe that’s going to be successful, but I have some doubts whether this is really the path to follow.'
Challenges in a Crowded Market
Nowakowski highlighted that one of the biggest challenges facing the industry is capturing consumer attention in an oversaturated market. He emphasized that success depends on having a 'fresh idea, with a soul, with legs,' a comment seen as a critique of AI-generated content. He believes that originality and emotional depth remain crucial for a game's success.
Cyberpunk 2077 Redemption Arc
Reflecting on CD Projekt's own history, Nowakowski admitted that the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020 may have permanently damaged trust with some players. Despite extensive improvements and expansions, he said, 'I’m not 100% convinced we went through the full redemption arc.' He acknowledged that the studio lost the faith of some players indefinitely but hopes to regain it with upcoming titles like The Witcher 4 or future projects.
Future Plans and Philosophy
CD Projekt is currently working on multiple projects, including The Witcher 4, a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, a new Witcher 3 expansion, spin-off codenamed Sirius, a remake of the original Witcher, and new IP Project Hadar. However, Nowakowski stressed that the studio does not aim to release major games annually. 'Our dream is to be making more games, although we never want to turn into the studio that’s going to be launching a big game every year,' he said. The next title, The Witcher 3 expansion Songs Of The Past, is slated for 2027.
