City AM's prestigious quarterly publication, The Magazine, has secured a nomination for a major industry honour, while its editor has also been recognised for his writing. The titles are in the running at the upcoming Regional Press Awards.
Double Nomination for City AM Publication
The Magazine has been shortlisted for Best Supplement at the Regional Press Awards. Simultaneously, its editor, Steve Dinneen, has earned a nomination in the Features Writer of the Year category. The winners will be revealed at a ceremony at Quaglinos on 11 March.
Launched in 2012 and now on its 89th edition, City AM The Magazine is a distinctive feature of London's media landscape. It is a luxury freemium title, hand-distributed in central London to a readership of City commuters. The recent Winter issue features actor Russell Tovey on its cover.
A Showcase of Longform Journalism and Culture
The publication is dedicated to in-depth cultural commentary and longform journalism. Its content ranges widely, from artistic explorations of electricity pylons to personal essays on middle age. It has investigated quirky modern phenomena, such as the mysterious distribution of rubber ducks at music festivals.
Regular sections cover watches, motoring, food, and travel. Previous cover stars have included high-profile names like Benedict Cumberbatch, Cush Jumbo, Luke Evans, and Usain Bolt.
The Nominated Features by Steve Dinneen
Dinneen's nominated work showcases his investigative range. One feature was an in-depth global investigation into rogue journalists using AI to create fabricated story pitches, which took him from Chicago to Nairobi. Another was a first-person account of his attempt to break a record by eating the world's hottest chicken tenders, delving into 'chilli-head' culture. His third nominated piece explored the future of retirement by checking into one of the world's most high-tech elderly-living residences.
In the Best Supplement category, The Magazine faces competition from Review by the Belfast Telegraph, Weekend by the Western Mail, and Weekend magazine by the Belfast Telegraph.
The Features Writer category is highly competitive. Dinneen is up against notable journalists including former City AM writer Jim Waterson (London Centric), Helena Vesty (Manchester Evening News), Liam Thorp (Liverpool Echo), and Sam McBride (Belfast Telegraph), among others.
Pride in a Unique Publication
Steve Dinneen, who has edited the magazine since it began, expressed his pride in the team's achievement. "We're hugely proud of City AM The Magazine, which has been bringing high quality, unexpected and unusual content to our readers for many years," he said.
He added, "We're very grateful to the judges for the nomination – I think it speaks to the hard work of the entire team from our writers to the commercial side of the operation, who have kept the magazine in the black despite a rather bleak media landscape."
On his personal nomination, Dinneen remarked, "And it is of course lovely to be nominated personally in the features' writers category. Editing a magazine is a full-time job in itself so it's great to be flagged for the features I've written, especially given the fairly outre subject matters."
