Tesco launches first Clubcard for teens aged 16-17

Tesco has introduced its first-ever Clubcard for teenagers, ending a 31-year policy that restricted the loyalty scheme to those aged 18 and over. The new card is available exclusively to 16 and 17-year-olds, but only if their parent or guardian already holds a Clubcard account and invites them to join.

How the new Clubcard for teens works

Teenagers must be invited through the parent's Clubcard account via the Tesco app or website. The 'invite to Clubcard' option is located in the app's settings, but only users with the latest version can access it. Those who cannot see the option are advised to update their app. Once invited, the teen does not receive a physical card; the membership is digital, accessible only through the Tesco app or website. The card can be used in-store or at Tesco petrol stations, but not for online purchases.

Benefits and restrictions

Like the standard Clubcard, the teen version allows members to access Clubcard Prices in stores, excluding some age-restricted items, and earn points that can be converted into vouchers for money off shopping. Tesco Group membership and loyalty director Shama Wilson said: 'We are delighted to be giving younger customers access to Tesco Clubcard for the first time, and we have no doubt that it will prove popular with 16 and 17-year-olds, whether they are shopping in one of our big Tesco or little Tesco stores. From today, our new Clubcard for 16-17s members will not only be able to get Clubcard Prices in-store, including our iconic Tesco lunchtime meal deal for just £3.85, but also collect points that they can turn into vouchers for money off their in-store shopping.'

Context and availability

The launch marks a significant shift for Tesco, which has maintained an age restriction since the Clubcard's inception in 1995. The move aims to engage younger shoppers and build loyalty early. The new card is available immediately for eligible teens who receive an invitation from a parent or guardian.
