Wizz Air probes 'jacket policy' at Spanish airports

Wizz Air is investigating multiple reports of 'overly strict' enforcement of hand luggage policies at certain Spanish airports after a British traveller's viral TikTok video showed airport staff in Alicante attempting to charge her €75 (£64.69) for a cabin bag that appeared to fit the baggage sizer. The airline confirmed to Metro that it is looking into the matter and has consulted with its ground handling partner regarding correct procedures.

Viral Video Sparks Backlash

TikTok user Mia Peltier (@mileswithmia) posted a video showing her interaction with airport staff who claimed her bag was oversized despite fitting the sizer. The clip has garnered 5.8 million views. In the video, Peltier repeatedly says, 'How does that not fit? It fits!' Staff then told her she was wearing too many layers and that there was a 'one jacket per person' policy. Spanish-speaking viewers claimed the workers said, 'We haven't been able to charge anyone, we need to charge her.'

Airline Denies 'Jacket Policy'

Wizz Air clarified that there is no such 'jacket policy' and no restrictions on the number of layers a passenger may wear. The airline reiterated that customers should only be charged if any part of their bag extends beyond the sizer's dimensions. Unlike Ryanair and EasyJet, Wizz Air specified that its employees do not receive commission for identifying oversized hand luggage.

Ground Handling Partners Under Scrutiny

Wizz Air explained that carry-on baggage checks at all airports are conducted by local ground handling partners contracted by the airline. These handlers are entitled to charge extra handling fees for oversized cabin baggage, with fees clearly displayed at the airport. It remains unclear whether these handlers earn commission from their own employers for spotting oversized bags.

Passenger Avoids Charge

Fortunately, Peltier did not have to pay the fee after another staff member intervened. The video also shows that the incident delayed the flight by 30 minutes. Commenters expressed sympathy, with one writing, 'I'm so happy you didn't back down despite stress because the bag fits.' Another asked, '"It's only one jacket per person" where is that written?'

Wizz Air Apologises

When contacted by Metro, Wizz Air apologised to passengers who are incorrectly charged for baggage. The airline encourages refund claims to be submitted via its website or mobile app using the baggage check-in receipt, supported by a photograph where possible.
