Delta Flight Crew Hospitalized After Severe Turbulence Incident
A Delta Air Lines flight from Los Angeles to Sydney encountered severe turbulence during its final descent on Friday morning, resulting in injuries to four crew members and prompting emergency medical response at Sydney Airport.
Emergency Response at Sydney Airport
Delta Air Lines Flight 41, operating with an Airbus A350 aircraft carrying 245 passengers and 15 crew members, hit a patch of rough air shortly before its scheduled landing. The aircraft touched down at approximately 6:40 AM local time, coming to a complete stop by 6:47 AM.
Ambulance New South Wales was called to the airport around 6:45 AM, with paramedics assessing five patients at the scene. The injured included crew members with various complaints: a woman in her 60s and a man in his 70s both reported back pain, a woman in her 30s experienced headache and back pain, a woman in her 70s had knee pain, and another individual suffered eye pain.
Hospitalization and Medical Care
Three of the injured crew members were transported to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with what authorities described as "minor injuries" affecting different parts of their bodies, including back injuries. The patients at the hospital declined to speak with media about their conditions.
A Delta Air Lines spokesperson emphasized the company's priorities, stating: "Nothing is more important than the safety of our people and our customers, and our priority is taking care of the impacted crew members."
Flight Path and Weather Conditions
The flight had been approaching from the southwest but altered course to approach from the northwest approximately 50 kilometers from the New South Wales coast. Sydney experienced strong onshore winds on Friday morning, though meteorological authorities indicated these appeared unrelated to Tropical Cyclone Narelle, which was approaching far north Queensland at the time.
Notably, none of the 245 passengers aboard the aircraft reported any injuries during the turbulence incident. The event highlights the unpredictable nature of air turbulence and its potential impact on flight crew during critical phases of flight operations.
