A tragic incident occurred during the construction of Shakira's stage for her upcoming free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A crew member was crushed to death while working on the set for the performance scheduled for Saturday, May 2.
Accident Details
The fire department was called after a technician suffered severe leg injuries due to a lifting system malfunction. The man was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. Concert organizer Bonus Track confirmed the death in a statement, expressing sorrow over the loss.
Witness Accounts
According to local media, a witness named Antonio Marcos Ferreira dos Santos reported that people began running 'out of nowhere' and saw the structure collapse. 'People were saying that a man had gotten trapped underneath. People rushed over to pull him out,' he said. Crews had been working for weeks to assemble the massive stage for the concert, which was expected to attract over one million attendees.
Shakira's Tour Success
The upcoming show follows Shakira's Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour, which translates to 'Women No Longer Cry.' That tour broke the Guinness World Record for the highest-grossing Latin tour of all time, earning over $421.6 million in its first 86 dates. Shakira's performance in Rio is set to follow similar large-scale free concerts by Lady Gaga and Madonna, who drew 2.5 million and 1.6 million fans, respectively.
Metro has reached out to Shakira's team for comment on the incident.
