Six Dead in Swiss Bus Fire After Man Sets Himself Alight

Tragedy Strikes Swiss Bus Journey as Six Perish in Devastating Fire

A quiet evening bus ride in western Switzerland turned into a scene of unimaginable horror on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and leaving three others with severe injuries. The catastrophic incident occurred in the town of Kerzers, located approximately 15 miles west of the Swiss capital, Bern, when a man allegedly set himself on fire inside the vehicle.

Chaos and Flames Engulf Regional Transport Bus

According to police spokesperson Frederic Papaux, the inferno that tore through the PostBus—a service affiliated with Switzerland's national postal service—is being treated as a potential "voluntary act." Disturbing images from Swiss media captured the bus completely engulfed in flames, with emergency services rushing to the scene. An eyewitness recounted the terrifying moment in Albanian, stating, "A man set himself on fire inside. He poured gasoline and set himself on fire!"

The regional government confirmed in a statement that rescue teams arrived to find the vehicle "totally engulfed in flames." The bus was traveling from Düdingen to Kerzers and burst into flames just before reaching its final stop, as reported by local media outlets.

Emergency Response and Ongoing Investigation

Ambulance and helicopter teams were swiftly deployed to the scene, transporting three individuals with severe injuries to the hospital for urgent medical care. Two additional passengers received treatment on-site. Police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident, though Mr. Papaux declined to comment on whether the tragedy is terror-related, emphasizing that the background is still being clarified.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed his profound sorrow on social media platform X, writing, "It distresses and saddens me that yet more people in Switzerland have lost their lives in a serious fire. To the relatives of the deceased from Kerzers, I extend my condolences. And I think of the injured and the emergency services."

A Grim Reminder of Recent Swiss Fire Disasters

This devastating event follows another tragic fire in Switzerland on New Year's Eve, where 41 people lost their lives in an inferno at the Constellation bar in the ski resort of Crans-Montana. That incident, which involved around 200 people including minors, resulted in severe burns for 115 individuals. The bar owners are currently facing trial for charges including manslaughter by negligence and causing arson by negligence.

Witnesses from the New Year's Eve tragedy claimed the fire started after a waitress placed candles on champagne bottles, one of which was held up to the wooden ceiling. Crans-Montana is a popular Alpine destination known for its stunning views of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, particularly favored by British skiers.

The Constellation bar, which opened in 2015, can accommodate up to 300 people in its main area with an additional 40 in its lounge. This latest bus fire in Kerzers adds to a series of fire-related incidents that have shaken Switzerland in recent months, raising concerns about safety protocols and emergency preparedness across the country.
