Two trains have crashed into each other between Bedford and Luton, resulting in serious injuries. Passengers were evacuated onto the tracks following the collision this evening. There is growing concern over the possibility of fatalities.
Emergency Response
More than 30 emergency vehicles have been dispatched to the scene. British Transport Police confirmed the incident, stating: 'Two trains crash in Bedford with railway lines closed.' Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service echoed the announcement.
The East of England Ambulance service has sent 'a number of resources,' and an air ambulance has been deployed. The collision is believed to involve two East Midlands Railway trains.
Official Reactions
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed deep concern, saying: 'I’m deeply concerned to hear reports of the collision involving 2 East Midlands Railway passenger trains. I’m grateful to emergency services who are on the scene, attending to those affected. We’re working quickly with the rail industry and local partners to support passengers.'
National Rail advised that trains will not be able to run in or out of St Pancras for the rest of the evening, and passengers are urged not to travel.
