UK Government Unveils Plan to Prevent Flight Cancellations Amid Jet Fuel Shortage
UK Plan to Stop Flight Cancellations Amid Fuel Shortage

The UK government has announced a package of measures aimed at preventing flight cancellations in the event of a jet fuel shortage, following the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Airlines will be permitted to consolidate services on the same day and hand back slots without risking their loss for the following season, according to ministers.

Government Response to Potential Fuel Crisis

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated that the government has been monitoring jet fuel supplies daily since the Strait of Hormuz closure and is working with airlines, airports, and fuel suppliers to address any potential issues. While there are no immediate supply problems, the government is preparing to provide families with long-term certainty and avoid disruption at departure gates this summer.

Measures to Protect Passengers

The proposed legislation will allow carriers to merge identical services operating on the same day without permanently losing valuable landing and takeoff slots. This flexibility aims to help airlines conserve fuel and optimize their schedules. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) chief executive Rob Bishton emphasized that passengers in the UK are protected by some of the strongest rights globally, including the choice between a refund or alternative travel arrangements if a flight is cancelled.

Industry Reaction

Airline bosses, including representatives from British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and easyJet, have reported no current supply issues and visibility until at least the end of the month. However, contingency plans are being developed in case the Strait of Hormuz remains closed through the summer. Karen Dee, chief executive of Airlines UK, stated that while shortages are not currently reported, industry leaders continue to work with the government to prepare for potential supply constraints.

Calls for Further Action

Some voices, including Green Party leader Zack Polanski, have urged the government to go further by banning private jets to conserve fuel for commercial flights. This move is also supported by a group of MEPs who have called on the European Commission to temporarily introduce a continent-wide ban on non-essential private air travel. Polanski argued that ordinary people are paying the price while the super-rich waste jet fuel on unnecessary trips.
