Historic Kingston Market Poised for Transformation with New Dining and Public Spaces
Plans have been formally submitted to revitalize one of London's oldest street markets, Kingston Ancient Market, with a comprehensive scheme that includes new stalls, a central piazza, restaurant, cafe, bar, and roof terrace. The ambitious proposal aims to breathe new life into the historic market, which first opened around 1170, ensuring its vitality for generations to come.
Operator Between the Bridges Unveils Vision for Market Renewal
Operator Between the Bridges, which took over management of the market in April last year from Kingston First, has presented detailed plans to Kingston Council. The proposal involves replacing the existing market stalls and redesigning their layout to improve pedestrian flow and accessibility throughout the space. Additionally, the plan includes installing new public toilets, seating areas, and shaded zones to enhance visitor comfort and facilities.
The firm intends to relocate the existing statue from the center to the edge of Market Square, creating a central piazza that can accommodate up to 45 stalls. This flexible space is designed to host pop-up markets, themed events, and weekend activities, fostering a dynamic atmosphere. A new roof terrace with additional seating will also be constructed, offering panoramic views over the square and surrounding area.
Revitalization of Grade II* Listed Market House
In a significant aspect of the proposal, the Grade II* listed Market House, which has remained largely vacant in recent years, will be extensively refurbished and brought back into active use. The ground floor will feature a restaurant and cafe, while the first floor will house a bar and versatile events space. This restoration aims to reinvigorate the building as a cultural and social hub within the market complex.
Planning documents emphasize the market's historical significance, stating: "Kingston Ancient Market Square is the historic heart of the town - a place where civic life, commerce, and culture have converged for centuries. The square's rich heritage, anchored by the Grade I listed All Saints Church and a tapestry of surrounding listed buildings, provides a powerful backdrop for renewal."
Enhancing Kingston's Legacy as a Trading Hub
The scheme seeks to restore the market as the "beating heart of Kingston's Old Town", blending historic character with modern amenities. The documents further explain: "This proposal reimagines the market square as a vibrant, flexible, and inclusive public realm - one that celebrates its historic character while equipping it for the needs of a 21st-century community. The project builds upon Kingston's legacy as a trading hub, creating a dynamic marketplace where food, culture, and civic activity thrive side by side."
Currently, the market operates daily from 10am to 5pm and hosts 28 permanent stalls. Between the Bridges assumed management as part of Kingston Council's broader strategy to revive the attraction, consolidating Kingston Ancient Market, Market Square, and Ancient Market House under a longer-term lease to better support traders and increase footfall.
Kingston Council will review and decide on the submitted plans in due course, potentially marking a new chapter for this centuries-old market.
