French Football Icon Youri Djorkaeff Expands Sports Portfolio with SailGP Investment

French football legend Youri Djorkaeff, alongside his son Sacha, has launched a strategic investment vehicle called Playmaker, which recently acquired a significant stake in the French team competing in the global SailGP racing series. The celebrated former Inter Milan, Monaco, and Bolton Wanderers forward, now 57, revealed that this move aligns with his lifelong passion for sailing and innovative sports ventures.

From World Cup Glory to High-Stakes Sailing Ventures

Two years after helping France secure victory in the 1998 home World Cup, Djorkaeff embarked on another remarkable adventure by joining the French America's Cup challenger in New Zealand. Reflecting on that experience, he describes it as "one of the most fantastic experiences in my life." This early exposure to elite sailing has now evolved into a formal investment through Playmaker, which focuses on emerging sports properties with global potential.

Sacha Djorkaeff, who previously worked in technology, advertising, and private equity, explains their investment philosophy: "We've looked at a lot of emerging sports and formats, and I think there's a trend around challenging the incumbent leagues. Very few have been able to establish sports properties that are sustainable and have the potential to be really global. SailGP really stood out in that sense."

Strategic Investment in SailGP France

The French SailGP team represents a perfect alignment with Playmaker's investment criteria, combining cutting-edge technology, environmental sustainability, and fan engagement. "We are excited because it's a sport with innovation, new technology, green sport as well," Youri Djorkaeff emphasizes. "And how the boats are sailing close to the fans, to the harbour, it's very interesting."

Notably, the investment group includes another prominent French football figure: current national team star Kylian Mbappé, who holds a minority stake. Djorkaeff comments on their partnership: "He's a friend. He is one of the best players in the world, but I like his mentality and am happy to be on board with him."

Playmaker's Comprehensive Sports Investment Strategy

Playmaker positions itself as an investment platform providing strategic capital across multiple sports sectors, including teams, leagues, consumer brands, media, and health and wellness ventures. Sacha Djorkaeff outlines their approach: "We look at macro trends and how major sports are being challenged. We've seen it in golf and sailing. In tennis it is happening as well. If the economic or governance or any aspect of the structure of these existing sports and leagues can be put to the test, they'll be challenged by new players."

The father-son duo believes their combined expertise in football—Youri's father Jean also represented France internationally—and business, coupled with their pan-European perspective, gives them unique advantages in the competitive sports investment landscape. "We've seen a lot of private equity flow into sports, from the Middle East, the US, institutional capital that doesn't always understand the complexities and nuances of a football club or a consumer brand in sports," Sacha observes. "Investing in a meaningful way, a thoughtful way, and looking at it as a unique asset class, is important."

The Elusive Search for the Right Football Club Investment

Despite their clear football pedigree and investment capacity, Playmaker has yet to secure a football club acquisition, though not for lack of effort. "It's been two decades. The right one hasn't come yet. But, yeah, we've been looking since I can remember," Sacha reveals. Youri Djorkaeff confirms they have evaluated numerous opportunities across England, France, and Italy, but none have matched their strategic requirements.

"We've been approached by many, many groups but for the moment, the price or the strategy didn't suit us," the former striker explains. "But we are looking and I think it will come one day, and it will be maybe a majority stake or a minority. It will depend on the people who will be at the table."

The Djorkaeffs emphasize that their European market knowledge gives them particular insight into regional differences that other investors might overlook. "Europe is a very specific market that we know exactly. We lived in England, Germany, Italy, France," Youri notes. "Manchester is not London and Paris is not Marseille. For some investors, it's France or it's England. I think our knowledge is important."

While their SailGP investment focuses on a French team, their future project selections will be driven by pragmatic, analytical considerations rather than national sentiment. A football club acquisition remains a clear objective for Playmaker, representing both significant opportunity and substantial risk in the volatile world of sports ownership.
