Hardware insider KeplerL2 has indicated that Sony's PlayStation 6 remains on track for a 2027 launch, countering speculation that the ongoing memory shortage could push the console's release to 2028 or 2029. In a NeoGaf thread discussing an Embracer Group financial report that suggested a potential delay, KeplerL2 responded with a classic 'nope' GIF of Danny DeVito from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, implying that delay rumors are unfounded.
Insider Signals No Delay
KeplerL2 reportedly liked a post by user Bojji, who argued that delaying the console when it is essentially complete makes no sense. Bojji noted that Sony has contracts with TSMC for APU production and possibly GDDR7 memory contracts, and that research and development costs have already reached several hundred million dollars. He also pointed out that PS5 sales are slowing and there is no guarantee memory prices will drop by 2030. This aligns with KeplerL2's earlier refutation in April, when he stated that AMD would not waste resources validating a chip they believed would be delayed.
Memory Shortage Context
The memory shortage has caused hardware prices to skyrocket, leading some analysts to predict delays for next-generation consoles from both Sony and Microsoft. The RAM shortage has already affected Valve's Steam Machine, raising questions about its impact on upcoming consoles. However, YouTuber Moore's Law Is Dead previously pushed back against delay reports, stating that Sony's contracts for chip manufacturing would be more costly to terminate than absorbing higher RAM costs.
Previous Console Cycles and PS5 Price Hike
Sony has not officially announced a release date or window for the PlayStation 6, but based on historical console cycles, a 2027 launch is widely expected. The PS5 recently saw a price increase of £90 to £519.99, suggesting that the PS6 will likely cost significantly more. The big question remains whether there is sufficient consumer appetite for a new console at a higher price point.
Credibility of Insiders
Both KeplerL2 and Moore's Law Is Dead have accurate track records regarding tech leaks, making them reliable sources for console hardware information. While Sony could delay its next console for various reasons, these insiders' consistent messaging suggests that a 2027 launch remains the plan.
