An American man living in London has been left astonished after revealing how relocating across the Atlantic had a significant impact on his body, having previously struggled to lose weight for years prior to his move.
From Chicago to London: A Life-Changing Move
Russell McKinley is a gaming influencer originally from Chicago who now calls London home, having made the move across the Atlantic a couple of years ago. While he often makes videos drawing comparisons between life in the UK and the US, from food products to everyday living, he has recently opened up about an unexpected transformation to his body that began occurring once he settled into his new life in London.
The Transformation Journey
“The moving to the UK effect,” he captioned the video, which turned out to be a slideshow documenting the remarkable weight loss journey he embarked upon over the past year.
Beginning in January 2025, Russell started documenting his weight loss progress, kicking things off at 279lbs (126.2kg). Just a month on, he had shed six pounds (2.7kg), sharing footage of himself heading out for a run. By the following month, he had dropped further to 267lbs (121.1kg).
His weight continued to steadily decline month after month, as he maintained that he still permitted himself to indulge in delicious food and other treats along the way. By July, he had officially dipped below the 250 mark, tipping the scales at an impressive 247lbs (112kg), all while making the most of his summer in London, including leisurely afternoons in pub gardens and eating out.
The weight loss continued, with an impressive nine pounds shed between August and September, followed by similar progress the next month. By January 2026, he officially tipped the scales at 197lbs (89.3kg), having dropped 82lbs (37kg) over the course of a year.
However, he wasn't finished, as he pressed on with his transformation until April 2026, when he reached 177lbs (80kg), having lost over 102lbs (46kg) in total.
The footage then displayed before and after photographs showcasing just how dramatically Russell had transformed physically over a year and four months, including him attempting to wear a pair of shorts that had fitted him prior to his weight loss.
Key Factors: Walking and Food
“If I knew that the better food and walking everywhere would lead to this, I would've made the move much sooner,” he commented beneath his post.
Russell went on to say: “Cheers to everyone who has shared supportive words and encouraged me on my journey to better health.”
The comments section quickly flooded with people applauding Russell for his weight loss transformation, as countless viewers were left astonished by his achievement.
When questioned whether he actively tried to shed the pounds, or if it had occurred naturally, Russell explained he'd been attempting to lose weight for several years while still residing in the US, but without success.
“It wasn't until moving to the UK that affordable whole food options became available to me and I started averaging 12,000+ steps every day instead of driving around,” Russell revealed.
He continued: “I did go to the gym here and there but mostly just walked or ran up to that step count. So in a way it was always a conscious effort but the healthy habits became core to my lifestyle instead of an exclusively dedicated effort.”
In a separate post, he elaborated: “It really came down to two things I wasn't tending to... regular exercise and my relationship with food. My new lifestyle in the UK allows and encourages me to nurture both of these things. Living in the US didn't. In the US I needed a car to get everywhere, sat a lot, and was eating food that was formulated to give me health problems. Not to mention being CONSTANTLY surrounded by a culture of overconsumption...”
“The little habits that changed with my move to the UK ended up having the BIGGEST effect on me,” he shared. “Before, I would look in the mirror and see how much I let myself go, and become a bit sad. But now, I see someone who just belonged in an environment that promotes healthier living. And I feel WONDERFUL.”
