Energy Supplier Collapse: What Tomato Energy Customers Need to Know
Thousands of households and businesses across the UK face an unexpected change to their energy provider as Tomato Energy enters administration. In a move coordinated by the energy regulator Ofgem, British Gas has been appointed to take over the supply for approximately 15,300 domestic customers and 8,400 business accounts.
The transition, announced on 10th November 2025, ensures that energy supply will continue without interruption. Crucially, all domestic customers will remain protected by the energy price cap, and any credit balances built up with the failed supplier are safeguarded.
Why Did Tomato Energy Fail?
The collapse of Tomato Energy did not happen overnight. The supplier had been under significant financial pressure for months, accumulating debts of around £3 million. The situation deteriorated to the point where Ofgem banned the company from taking on new customers back in April.
Last month, the regulator proposed a substantial £1.5 million fine against Tomato Energy for failing to meet mandatory financial resilience rules. The company is now expected to formally appoint administrators in the near future.
Your Rights and Next Steps as a Customer
If you are one of the affected customers, here is the essential information you need:
British Gas will contact you directly in the coming days and weeks with specific details about the transfer of your account. You do not need to take any immediate action.
While your supply will automatically move to British Gas, you are not locked in. You have the right to switch to a different supplier without facing any exit fees. Industry experts advise waiting until the initial transition to British Gas is complete before shopping for a new deal, as this process will be smoother.
Rohan Churm, Ofgem’s director for financial resilience and controls, stated: "Minimising the disruption to customers is our top priority when a supplier exits the market, so I am pleased to confirm British Gas has been appointed to take on customers of Tomato Energy."
A Wider Pattern of Supplier Failures
This event is part of a larger trend of instability in the UK energy market. Chris O’Shea, CEO of British Gas's parent company Centrica, highlighted that Tomato Energy is the 31st supplier to collapse since 2021.
O’Shea sought to reassure incoming customers, saying, "We are proud to step up for Tomato Energy’s customers. Their energy supply is secure, their credit balances will be protected, and we will make their transition to British Gas seamless."
For former Tomato Energy customers, the path forward is clear: monitor your communications, understand the new tariff offered by British Gas, and remember that you are free to shop around for a better deal once the transfer is finalised, giving you full control over your energy future.
