A married British couple tragically drowned in front of horrified family members during a day out at a popular Australian beach. The incident occurred early Wednesday at Shellharbour Beach South in Shell Cove, New South Wales, where the 66-year-old man and 64-year-old woman encountered difficulties while swimming.
Desperate Rescue Attempts
Other beachgoers, including two off-duty nurses who happened to be at the beach between shifts, pulled the couple from the water and immediately began performing CPR. Paramedics arrived shortly afterward, supported by firefighters and an air ambulance that was ultimately not required. Despite these extensive efforts, both individuals were declared dead at the scene.
Family Tragedy Unfolds
Police confirmed the couple were visiting Australia from the United Kingdom to see relatives, some of whom were present at the beach during the tragic event. New South Wales Police Inspector Luke Geradts told ABC News: "This is a tragic incident, and our hearts go out to the family who lost their loved ones today."
Inspector Geradts commended the bravery of those who attempted to revive the couple, noting: "They're young people who are upstanding members of our community who did a great job today in trying to give this couple the best chance."
Emergency Response and Aftermath
The incident triggered a substantial emergency response, with more than a dozen emergency workers remaining at the scene. Privacy tents were erected to shield other beach visitors from the distressing situation. Remarkably, the two off-duty nurses who rushed to assist did not know each other and were separately visiting the beach during their time off.
Beach Safety Concerns
It is understood that lifeguards were not patrolling Shellharbour Beach at the time of the incident. This tragedy adds to concerning statistics about water safety in Australia, with 81 open water deaths reported across the country since December 1 according to News.com.
