Brits Embrace Multiple 'Holidays of a Lifetime' Through Loyalty Rewards
A recent poll indicates that the average British citizen has enjoyed three 'holidays of a lifetime', with top destinations including the Maldives, Tokyo, and the Great Barrier Reef. This marks a significant shift from the traditional view of such trips as rare occurrences, as 46 percent of Brits now believe dream vacations are more achievable than they were a decade ago.
Loyalty Points Transform Travel Accessibility
According to the survey of 2,000 adults, a striking 70 percent have utilized loyalty points to book journeys that were previously financially out of reach. The research, part of Virgin Red's fourth annual 'The Points Index: Living the Dream Holiday' report, highlights how loyalty programs are reshaping travel priorities. In 2025, adults redeemed 31.2 billion points across travel experiences, representing a 13 percent increase from the previous year.
Key Criteria for Dream Holidays
When defining a 'holiday of a lifetime', respondents prioritized stunning natural scenery (50 percent) and luxury accommodation (45 percent). Additional essential elements include exceptional food and drink (40 percent) and experiences unique to the region's culture (38 percent). The data also reveals that point-spending peaks in the UK during May, July, and September, potentially linked to seasonal travel trends.
Travel Trends and Motivations
Currently, 34 percent of Brits are actively planning a major holiday, with 39 percent favoring beach and relaxation getaways abroad, while only 19 percent opt for shorter trips. Notably, 21 percent would book a significant journey to celebrate a milestone birthday. The survey further found that 74 percent have used loyalty points to cover part or all of a flight cost, and 29 percent have upgraded flights using points.
Expert Insights on Loyalty's Impact
Andrea Burchett, chief loyalty officer at Virgin Red, commented: 'Loyalty is fundamentally reshaping how consumers think about travel. Trips once seen as 'once in a lifetime' are becoming achievable, as consumers increasingly treat points as a strategic currency. Even amid economic uncertainty, points are helping consumers prioritise meaningful travel.'
