Fire Engulfs Prestigious Alpine Resort Hotel
A significant fire erupted at the Grandes Alpes hotel, a five-star luxury establishment in the renowned French Alpine resort of Courchevel 1850, leading to the evacuation of approximately 100 guests and staff. The blaze, which began in the attic of the hotel on Tuesday evening, continued to burn into Wednesday morning, with emergency services struggling to contain it as flames spread to adjacent wooden structures.
Emergency Response and Evacuation Efforts
Local authorities reported that around 60 firefighters were deployed to combat the fire, which posed considerable challenges due to the building's design. Bruno Charlot, the sub-prefect of Albertville, explained that the roof's slate and sheet metal construction made it difficult to access the flames, requiring the removal of stones and cutting through metal sheets. A thick layer of snow on the roof further complicated efforts, with officials estimating it would take hours to fully extinguish the blaze.
In addition to the Grandes Alpes, approximately 200 people were evacuated from the neighbouring Lana Hotel as a precautionary measure. All evacuees were temporarily housed in a nearby municipal hall, and guests from the Grandes Alpes were later relocated to other hotels within the resort. Fortunately, no serious casualties were reported, with only minor injuries sustained by firefighters.
Investigation and Safety Concerns
Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire, which comes in the wake of another tragic incident in the Alps. On New Year's Day, a fire at the Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, resulted in 40 fatalities and 116 severe burns, highlighting ongoing safety issues in the region. The owners of that bar are currently under criminal investigation for manslaughter by negligence, though they deny any wrongdoing.
Courchevel's Celebrity Appeal and Royal Connections
Courchevel 1850 is celebrated as one of the most upmarket and expensive resorts in the Alps, attracting a high-profile clientele including celebrities like David and Victoria Beckham, singer Robbie Williams, and cricket legend Ian Botham. The resort has also been linked to royal visits; in 2016, the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge holidayed there, and unconfirmed reports suggest the Prince and Princess of Wales may have enjoyed a secret getaway in January with their family.
The Grandes Alpes hotel, known for its exclusivity, offers nine apartments with butler service, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and amenities such as a swimming pool and sauna.
