UK Foreign Office Issues Urgent Travel Alert for 16 Nations Including Turkey & Egypt
Urgent UK travel alert for 16 countries including hotspots

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued an urgent new travel alert this morning, highlighting serious concerns for British nationals in a region encompassing sixteen countries, several of which are major tourist destinations for UK travellers.

Popular Holiday Destinations in the Spotlight

The fresh advisory specifically names popular holiday hotspots frequented by hundreds of thousands of Britons each year. Travellers to Turkey, the United Arab Emirates (including Dubai), Cyprus, and Egypt are now advised by officials to 'take extra precautions' and to keep a close watch on how events develop.

The warning comes amidst escalating regional tensions centred on Iran. Early on Thursday, Iran closed its airspace to commercial flights for over four hours, according to pilot guidance, disrupting a vital East-West flight corridor. This forced international carriers to reroute flights north and south around the country.

While the closure appeared to end after one extension, with domestic flights resuming around 7am local time, the incident has raised significant alarm. The aviation safety network SafeAirspace noted that several airlines have already reduced or suspended services, with most now avoiding Iranian airspace altogether.

Risks of Escalation and Past Tragedies

In its alert, the Foreign Office stated: "There is a heightened risk of regional tension. Escalation could lead to travel disruption and other unanticipated impacts." It further advises British nationals to "take sensible precautions, considering their own individual circumstances."

The site SafeAirspace warned the situation could signal further military activity, increasing the risk of misidentification of civilian aircraft. This concern is tragically grounded in recent history. In January 2020, Iranian air defences mistakenly shot down Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 with two surface-to-air missiles, killing all 176 people on board.

Iran has previously closed its airspace during conflicts, including the 12-day war with Israel in June and during exchanges of fire in the Israel-Hamas war. The current airspace restrictions coincided with reports of certain US military staff in Qatar being told to evacuate, and the US Embassy in Kuwait pausing non-essential visits to military bases.

Political Context and the Full List of Countries

The tensions follow Iran's violent suppression of nationwide protests and come amid ambiguous statements from US President Donald Trump. On Wednesday, Mr Trump claimed to have been informed that planned executions in Iran had been halted, a day after assuring protesters that "help is on the way." Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has meanwhile called for negotiations over confrontation.

Fears are mounting that any US military action against Iran could trigger a wider regional escalation, sparking violence and major travel chaos. The Foreign Office alert covers the following sixteen countries:

  • Bahrain
  • Cyprus
  • Egypt
  • Iran
  • Iraq
  • Jordan
  • Kuwait
  • Lebanon
  • Libya
  • Oman
  • Qatar
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Syria
  • Turkey
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Yemen

British travellers with plans to visit any of these nations are strongly urged to monitor the latest FCDO travel advice closely and to exercise heightened caution.
