How to Spot Fake Vapes: Key Signs and Health Risks in the UK
Vape packaging must include a UK distributor’s address, nicotine warnings, a full ingredient list, and labeling in English, while avoiding poor-quality materials. This is crucial for consumer safety, as millions of illegal devices are seized annually across the country.
The Dangers of Counterfeit Vaping Devices
When you purchase a vape from a high street shop, it might appear normal at first glance. However, after charging and using it for a few days, you may notice it overheating excessively. This is a clear indicator of a fake vape, one of thousands illegally sold in UK shops. Manufacturers of these counterfeit products often skip essential safety features, such as a simple circuit to prevent overheating, to save a few pence. This cost-cutting measure significantly increases the risk of the device catching fire, posing serious safety threats to users.
Over the past three years, councils have seized approximately 5 million illegal vaping devices, according to data compiled by the legitimate vape industry. John Dunne, head of the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA), warns that these illegal vapes can harm people’s health because they do not undergo the same rigorous testing as legal devices. He explains, "While the packaging and product might look similar, copycat manufacturers often omit safety features to keep costs low, making these devices potentially dangerous."
Financial and Health Impacts of Illegal Vapes
Figures from local authorities, provided to the UKVIA, estimate the street value of seized vapes at £39 million over the last three years. Seizures have occurred not only in retail shops but also at major transport hubs, including Luton Airport and Dover. In addition to lacking safety mechanisms, many non-compliant e-cigarettes feature higher nicotine concentrations, contain banned ingredients, or have oversized tanks for nicotine liquid, further exacerbating health risks.
Identifying Fake Vapes: Telltale Signs
Detecting a fake vaping device can be challenging, but there are several key indicators to watch for. Dunne notes that buying a fake vape is an easy mistake, as packaging often mimics legitimate brands. One of the most critical signs is the absence of a UK distributor’s address on the box. "If it doesn’t have this, it’s definitely dodgy," he says, emphasizing that all legal vapes in the UK must clearly display a UK representative on their packaging.
Other red flags include:
- Poor-quality packaging with low-resolution photos or labels.
- Missing nicotine warnings or incomplete ingredient lists.
- Labeling written in a foreign language instead of English.
- Serial numbers that are identical across multiple boxes, rather than unique to each item, as discovered in recent police raids.
Steps to Take if You Suspect a Fake Vape
To protect yourself, always inspect the packaging for the signs mentioned above and avoid purchasing any device that raises concerns. If you encounter an unfamiliar brand, you can verify its registration with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) through their official website. Additionally, you can report retailers suspected of selling illegal products to the UKVIA.
If you have unknowingly bought a fake vape, document the issue by taking photographs and providing details of the purchase location to your local Trading Standards office. This helps authorities crack down on illegal sales and safeguard public health.
