Aldi Price Shock: Two Items Soar 58% in Four Years Amid Cost of Living Crisis

Britons grappling with the ongoing cost of living crisis may face even steeper price increases for daily essentials, as conflicts in the Middle East threaten to drive up food, energy, and petrol costs once again. This potential surge follows a period of significant inflation over the past four years, exacerbated by events such as the Ukraine war and the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, which have severely impacted household spending power.

Staggering Price Increases Revealed in Aldi Comparison

To illustrate the extent of these changes, a recent investigation compared the prices of 13 common grocery items at Aldi between June 2022 and March 2026. The findings highlight dramatic fluctuations in food costs, with some products experiencing price hikes of nearly 60 percent. The most shocking increases were observed in easy peelers and diet lemonade, which saw rises of 58 percent and 53 percent, respectively. Easy peelers jumped from 72p to £1.75, while a two-litre bottle of diet lemonade increased from 23p to 49p.

Notable Hikes Across Multiple Categories

Beyond these standout items, other essentials also saw substantial price increases. Red onions rose by 29 percent from 67p to 95p, strawberry jam increased by 36 percent from 31p to 49p, and a packet of four salmon fillets surged by 35 percent from £4.40 to £6.85. Pasta and bacon were not spared, with penne pasta up 21 percent (from 32p to 41p for 500g) and spaghetti up 30 percent (from 23p to 33p). Whether smoked or unsmoked, 1kg of bacon now costs £1 more than in 2022, representing a 19 percent increase.

Expert Warnings of Further Price Rises

Christopher Sharp, the writer who conducted the comparison, expressed concern over the findings. "Overall, whilst the price rises were not unexpected, I was stunned by how much some of the products had risen, such as the easy peelers and the spaghetti," he said. "However, I am also concerned by the price rises to come because of the Middle East conflict. How will the below table look in three to six months time?"

Jim Mellon, an investor and Chief Executive of Agronomics, echoed these concerns, stating: "Global conflicts, along with climate change, are causing food shortages, supply chain issues and price spikes in the UK and beyond." Retail analysts at Omnisend added that rising oil and gas prices will make transporting goods more expensive, a cost likely to be passed on to consumers through higher retail prices.
