Dunelm Announces Major Store Expansion Strategy

Dunelm, the Leicester-based furniture and homeware retailer, has revealed ambitious plans to significantly expand its physical store presence across the United Kingdom. The FTSE 250 company aims to capture a larger share of the competitive home furnishings market by increasing accessibility for customers nationwide.

Driving Growth Through Physical Expansion

Chief executive Clo Moriarty, who joined the business from Sainsbury's in October, confirmed to City AM that Dunelm has identified numerous potential new locations for store openings. The company intends to actively pursue these expansion opportunities throughout the coming year.

"We have really loyal customers, and for those most loyal customers we still only capture 15 per cent of their homewares wallet," Moriarty explained. "There's lots to do to capture more of that by making our really great ranges easier to shop."

The retailer currently reaches approximately 60 per cent of the UK population within a fifteen-minute drive time, a figure Moriarty believes should be substantially higher. "More customers deserve more Dunelm," she emphasised, highlighting the company's commitment to broader geographical coverage.

Navigating Subdued Consumer Confidence

Despite expansion plans, Moriarty acknowledged ongoing challenges with consumer confidence across the retail sector. She noted that cost-conscious shoppers are increasingly seeking value through deals and discounted pricing.

"Customer confidence has remained low over a prolonged period of time," Moriarty observed. "What that tells me is that every pound of disposable income is hard-earned by retailers and a lot of thought goes in by customers on how and where to spend it."

The executive reported seeing "high levels of discounting with customers looking for deals" while simultaneously noting that consumers remain interested in seasonal trends and fresh product offerings.

Teal Emerges as Dominant Colour Trend

Amid cautious spending patterns, Dunelm has identified a significant trend toward teal-coloured homeware products. The pale blue hue has become particularly popular among British consumers looking to refresh their living spaces.

"We're definitely seeing high levels of discounting with customers looking for deals. But in equal measure we can see customers now keen to look at what's fresh for the season," Moriarty said. "So we have this big theme going on of transformative teal. Teal is the colour."

Financial Performance and Digital Strategy

Dunelm reported mixed financial results for the second half of 2025, with sales growing 3.6 per cent to £926 million while pre-tax profit declined 7.5 per cent to £114 million. The company declared an interim dividend of 17p per share, representing a 3 per cent increase, alongside a special dividend of 25p that decreased from 35p in previous periods.

In addition to physical expansion, the retailer is focusing on digital customer acquisition through the launch of a new mobile application. This dual approach aims to strengthen Dunelm's market position, which currently stands at 7.9 per cent of the UK homeware market.

Following the announcement, Dunelm shares rose 1.3 per cent to 950p, though the stock has declined approximately 15 per cent since the beginning of the year. This decrease follows earlier warnings that profits would likely fall at the lower end of market expectations.
