John Lewis Unveils Major Restaurant Overhaul Across 32 Stores Nationwide
Iconic British department store John Lewis has announced a significant transformation of its in-store dining offerings, with plans to revamp restaurants across 32 locations. The retailer has confirmed that the first six sites will reopen from summer 2026, marking the beginning of a comprehensive overhaul that will see all existing Place to Eat locations refreshed under a new brand identity.
Strategic Partnership with Benugo Drives Change
The transformation comes as part of a new deal with café brand Benugo, which has signed an agreement to partner with John Lewis on this ambitious project. All 32 restaurants will be redesigned with a clear focus on delivering fresh, high-quality food within welcoming and comfortable spaces for customers. The new dining concept will operate under a fresh name and brand, which is scheduled to be unveiled as the initial sites open their doors later this year.
First Six Locations Revealed for Summer 2026 Launch
John Lewis has identified the first six stores where restaurant transformations will take place, with reopening planned from summer 2026. These include:
- Oxford Street, London (flagship store)
- Bluewater, Dartford
- Chichester
- Norwich
- Nottingham
- Reading
Work on the Bluewater, Chichester, Norwich, Nottingham, and Reading locations is set to commence between May and June 2026, with the entire estate expected to complete its transition by 2027.
Focus on Quality Ingredients and Local Suppliers
The new restaurant menus will feature an array of culinary options including bakery items, deli selections, and handmade pizzas. A key emphasis will be placed on using locally-sourced ingredients and collaborating with trusted suppliers to ensure quality and sustainability. This approach aligns with both brands' commitment to delivering exceptional food experiences.
Executive Perspectives on the Transformation
Ben Warner, founder of Benugo, expressed enthusiasm about the expanded partnership: "We're incredibly proud of our longstanding partnership with John Lewis, and we're excited to be growing it to create an exciting new brand. At Benugo, we care deeply about great food made with fresh, quality ingredients that are thoughtfully sourced and rooted in local suppliers."
He added: "What matters just as much to us is the people. As we expand our work together, we'll be working closely with the partners, sharing our focus on training and experience so the teams feel supported and confident to deliver the warm, welcoming hospitality that both Benugo and John Lewis are known for."
Katie Papakonstantinou, director of services and hospitality for John Lewis, commented: "Our customers will benefit from a fresh and exciting John Lewis hospitality experience as we reimagine how we use the space within our stores. Our plans look amazing, and our restaurants and cafés will offer delicious food and drinks combined with the personal service that our customers expect and deserve. We're excited to share even more details ahead of the first of the new spaces opening later this year."
Complementing Existing Hospitality Offerings
The transformed restaurants will sit alongside other established hospitality brands within John Lewis stores, including Ori cafés, Huffkin's Tea Rooms, and Café Jamie Oliver. This new dining concept is designed to complement and strengthen the retailer's overall hospitality mix, providing customers with enhanced choices and improved dining experiences during their shopping visits.
This strategic move represents John Lewis's continued commitment to evolving its customer experience and adapting to changing consumer preferences in the competitive retail landscape.
