Metrocentre's Major £6 Million Revamp Transforms UK Shopping Destination
When considering Britain's premier retail destinations, London's Westfield complexes, Battersea Power Station, and Edinburgh's St James' Quarter typically dominate the conversation. However, a formidable northern contender is poised to reclaim the spotlight. The Metrocentre in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, currently the United Kingdom's second-largest shopping centre, is undergoing a substantial £6,000,000 transformation as it approaches its 40th anniversary.
A Retail Powerhouse Gets a Refresh
First opened in 1986, the Metrocentre briefly held the title of Europe's largest shopping centre. Today, it remains a retail behemoth, housing over 270 stores and 60 dining establishments across five interconnected malls. The new investment is funding a dedicated hub for independent retailers named The Crescent, designed to enhance connectivity between the Blue and Green malls.
"The design takes inspiration from picturesque market towns, creating a calm, beautifully detailed space for guests to shop, meet for coffee and enjoy a different pace within Metrocentre," explained a spokesperson for the shopping centre.
The Crescent: A Village Within a Mall
This 10,000-square-foot development aims to foster a "warm, welcoming space with a village-like feel." Architectural features will include Victorian-inspired storefronts with traditional fascias, panel doors, and hand-painted signage. The area will also incorporate treated columns resembling trees extending to the ceiling, complemented by greenery and natural tones to simulate an external village street atmosphere.
Ben Cox, director at Sovereign Centros from CBRE, asset managers for Metrocentre, stated: "We know our visitors love discovering something new, and The Crescent is designed to offer exactly that — a space filled with character, independent brands and a welcoming feel."
Previously, independent retailers were located in The Forum, but The Crescent represents a new, enhanced dedicated zone for small businesses. The space will also feature an artisan coffee hub, positioned as an ideal spot for social catch-ups or remote work away from the main shopping thoroughfares.
New National and International Brands Join the Lineup
Alongside The Crescent refurbishment, Metrocentre is expanding its retail portfolio with several major store openings. Spanish fashion brand Stradivarius has recently opened its first North East store in the Lower Red Mall. A 16,000-square-foot Bershka store is scheduled to open in the Red Mall, joining the existing Zara and the new Stradivarius. Additionally, Hollister will establish a presence in that section of the centre.
The popular Danish homeware and lifestyle brand Søstrene Grene, which has gained significant traction on UK high streets, is another recent addition to Metrocentre's diverse retail offering.
Customer Acclaim and Lasting Appeal
The centre continues to receive enthusiastic praise from its 15.8 million annual visitors, who typically spend over two hours exploring its vast array of shops. Online reviews frequently highlight the centre's comprehensive offering.
"My family love the Metrocentre! The amount of shops boggles the mind," said visitor Susan Hodgson. Another shopper, Craig, summarized the appeal succinctly: "There's everything you need under one roof."
Additional commendations cite the huge range of shops—from high-street staples to designer outlets—coupled with ample restaurants, cafes, easy and free parking, a navigable layout, and a consistently clean, well-lit, and family-friendly environment.
The renovation works are expected to conclude within the coming months, with a formal opening date for The Crescent to be announced. This significant investment underscores Metrocentre's ongoing evolution as a leading retail and leisure destination in the North of England, blending major international brands with unique independent offerings in a revitalized, community-focused environment.
