Poundland, Primark, River Island January 2026 closures

The British high street faces a turbulent start to 2026, with several major retail chains confirming a wave of store closures this January. Household names including Poundland, Primark, and River Island are all set to shut branches, marking a significant shift for in-person shopping across the UK.

Poundland's Major Restructure: 12 More Stores to Shut

Discount giant Poundland is in the midst of a major restructuring plan under its new owner, Gordon Brothers, who bought the chain from the Pepco Group in 2025 to rescue it from administration. As part of this overhaul, a further 12 stores are scheduled to close in January 2026.

The confirmed closure dates and locations are:

  • Bexhill – January 5
  • Ponders End – January 5
  • Kilmarnock – January 5
  • Faversham – January 6
  • Mitcham – January 14
  • Liverpool – January 15
  • Yeovil – January 16
  • Cameron Toll – January 20
  • Nottingham Eastpoint – January 22
  • Lymington – January 23
  • Christchurch (47 High Street) – January 23
  • Bristol Avon Meads – January 29

These come on top of numerous closures that took place in late 2025, including stores in Twickenham, Leicester, Blackpool, and Carlisle, bringing the total number of shuttered Poundland shops into the dozens.

Primark's Rare Closure and River Island's Online Pivot

In a move that has surprised shoppers, value fashion retailer Primark is closing its store in The Orchards Shopping Centre in Dartford. Its final day of trading will be Saturday, January 3, 2026. This marks the brand's first closure in ten years.

Philippa Nibbs, Primark's director of sales for UK South and South East, explained the decision was due to "the significant and extensive repair work the building requires." She thanked the local community for their support. Customers are directed to nearby branches in Bexleyheath and Bluewater Shopping Centre.

Meanwhile, fashion chain River Island is pressing ahead with a strategic shift towards online retail. The company confirmed it will have closed 33 stores permanently by the end of January 2026. CEO Ben Lewis stated the move was part of a "clear transformation strategy to ensure the long-term viability of the business" and to better align the store estate with customer needs.

The extensive list of River Island closures includes branches in Beckton, Brighton, Edinburgh Princes Street, Oxford, and Norwich, among others.

What This Means for the UK High Street

The January 2026 closures from these three prominent retailers underscore the ongoing pressures facing physical retail. Factors range from corporate restructuring and changing consumer habits to the practical realities of maintaining older retail spaces.

For communities, the loss of these stores impacts local employment and reduces shopping options on the high street. The situation highlights the continued evolution of the UK's retail landscape, where adaptation and restructuring are becoming the norm for survival.
