Tesco Announces Major 2026 Expansion Strategy
Tesco has revealed ambitious expansion plans for 2026, confirming the opening of 11 new supermarkets across the United Kingdom as part of its ongoing growth strategy. The retail giant's expansion includes significant developments in London and multiple regions throughout the country.
London Conversions and Express Store Growth
In a strategic move, Tesco will convert five former Amazon Fresh stores in London into Tesco Express outlets, with all locations scheduled to reopen before summer 2026. These London conversions represent a key component of Tesco's broader plan to launch more than 70 Express stores before March 2027.
The full list of new London Express locations includes:
- Kensington High Street
- Hounslow
- Moorgate
- Aldgate East
- Wembley
National Expansion Beyond London
Tesco's expansion extends well beyond the capital, with additional Express stores planned for:
- Bickington, Devon
- Pontrhydyrun, Torfaen
- Wallyford, East Lothian
- Strabane, County Tyrone
Following successful superstore launches in Ripon and Harrogate during 2025, Tesco will add two large superstores in Scotland in 2026. The new Pitlochry and Heartlands locations will join the Harrogate superstore, which has already created approximately 120 jobs and features innovative sustainability measures including timber frames, solar panels, and energy-efficient heating and lighting systems.
Sustainability and Community Impact
Nick Johnson, Tesco Group Property Director, emphasized the company's commitment to community service, stating: "As we grow our store network we're delighted to have the opportunity to serve even more people, in even more communities."
The 2026 expansion builds upon Tesco's successful opening of 60 new Express stores in 2025, demonstrating the company's continued dedication to bringing exceptional value to communities across the United Kingdom. This strategic growth positions Tesco to strengthen its market presence while implementing environmentally conscious building practices across new locations.
