Tesco has unveiled ambitious expansion plans that will see the retail giant open 70 new Express convenience stores across the United Kingdom, with a significant focus on London locations. This strategic move includes the acquisition and conversion of five former Amazon Fresh sites within the capital, marking a notable shift in the competitive landscape of neighbourhood retail.
Strategic Expansion Across London and Beyond
The supermarket chain confirmed that all new stores will be operational by March 2027, building upon the successful opening of 60 Tesco Express outlets during 2025. This represents a substantial investment in the convenience store format at a time when consumer shopping habits continue to evolve toward more frequent, local purchases.
Former Amazon Fresh Locations Reborn
Five specific London sites previously operated by Amazon Fresh will be transformed into Tesco Express branches before the summer months. These locations include prominent areas such as:
- Kensington High Street
- Hounslow
- Moorgate
- Aldgate East
- Wembley
This acquisition follows Amazon's decision last September to shutter all 19 remaining Amazon Fresh physical outlets as the technology company refocuses on its digital operations. At the time of closure, Amazon indicated plans to convert five properties into Whole Foods locations, though Tesco has now secured these sites for its own expansion.
Nationwide Growth Strategy
Beyond the London acquisitions, Tesco's expansion will reach communities across all four nations of the United Kingdom. Additional confirmed locations include:
- Bickington in Devon
- Pontrhydyrun in Wales
- Strabane in Northern Ireland
- Wallyford in Scotland
The company is also planning to launch two major stores in Scotland this year – in Pitlochry and Heartlands – following recent superstore openings in Ripon and Harrogate in North Yorkshire at the close of last year.
Industry Context and Consumer Trends
This expansion reflects broader industry trends as supermarkets accelerate their convenience store networks in response to changing consumer behaviour. Shoppers are increasingly moving away from large weekly shopping trips toward more frequent visits to local, accessible stores that offer essential items and fresh produce.
Nick Johnson, Tesco group property director, commented on the expansion: "As we grow our store network we're delighted to have the opportunity to serve even more people, in even more communities."
Tesco currently operates just over 2,000 Express branches throughout the UK and Ireland, making it one of the most extensive convenience store networks in the country. This latest expansion will further strengthen its market position while providing additional shopping options for communities across the nation.
