Royal Mail Delays Disrupt London and 44 UK Postcodes Today
Royal Mail has issued a fresh delivery disruption notice impacting postcodes throughout the United Kingdom, with significant effects felt across London. This announcement comes as the postal service faces mounting criticism over delayed deliveries and concurrent increases in stamp prices.
Service Disruptions and Apologies
Earlier this week, billionaire owner Daniel Kretinsky expressed regret to Members of Parliament, stating, "Of course I am deeply sorry for any letters that arrive late." However, he firmly rejected claims that Royal Mail's punctuality record is deteriorating. During questioning by the Commons Business select committee, Kretinsky remarked, "It is not perfect, but it is not catastrophic."
The organization was penalized £21 million last October for failing to meet First and Second Class delivery standards in its previous financial year. Reports indicate that only 77% of First Class mail and 92.5% of Second Class mail were delivered on time during the 2024-25 period, falling well below the respective benchmarks of 93% and 98.5%.
Stamp Price Increases and Current Delays
This disruption warning follows confirmation that First Class stamps will rise to £1.80 and Second Class stamps to 91p, effective from April 6. Notably, a First Class stamp cost just 76p in 2020, highlighting a sharp increase over recent years.
As of Thursday, March 26, disruptions have affected numerous regions across the UK, including postcodes around Whitechapel in London. Currently, 21 delivery offices are experiencing setbacks, creating a domino effect across 44 postcode districts.
Royal Mail's Statement and Operational Issues
Royal Mail stated, "We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week." The service acknowledged that in a small number of local offices, temporary issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing challenges, or other local factors may prevent timely deliveries. In such cases, Royal Mail plans to rotate deliveries to minimize delays for individual customers.
The organization emphasized providing targeted support to affected offices to restore service standards. "We're sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding," the statement concluded.
Over the previous 24 hours, Royal Mail's road and air network operated according to schedule. However, difficulties arose at the Manchester Mail Centre, impacting mail posted within the BL, M, OL, and SK postcode districts intended for delivery to other UK regions today.
