NatWest Announces Major Branch Closures Across the UK

NatWest has confirmed plans to close 37 branches over the coming year, with specific dates set for 34 locations and three additional closures pending finalization. The majority of these shutdowns are scheduled to occur before the end of June 2026, marking a significant reduction in the bank's physical presence as customer preferences shift towards digital services.

Closure Details and Banking Hub Replacements

In a statement on its website, NatWest explained that the closures are driven by increased demand for mobile and online banking, which offers faster and more convenient access for customers. The bank emphasized that many of the affected branches will be replaced by banking hubs, managed in partnership with the Post Office, to ensure continued in-person service availability. "We understand the closure of your local branch will bring some changes, and we want to make sure you are fully informed and supported every step of the way," NatWest stated.

Since 2020, NatWest has invested £115 million in its branch network and has committed to maintaining financial support for the next three years. Despite this investment, the bank has closed hundreds of branches since 2022, including over 100 in the past year alone. A spokesperson noted, "We carefully assess where and when we make the difficult decision to close a branch to minimise the impact any change may have on our customers and colleagues."

Barclays Reverses Closure Strategy

In a contrasting move, Barclays has recently suspended its own branch closure plans. Since 2018, Barclays has shut down over 800 branches, leaving only 206 operational across the UK, according to its latest annual report. However, Vim Maru, CEO of Barclays UK, announced a halt to further closures and plans to expand the network again. "What we're trying to do is something that allows us to differentiate in front of our customers," Maru told The Times. He added, "Of course we're going to be great in digital - but we're going to be there for you when you need some help and support. You're not going to be stuck in some chatbot trying to get out of the loop and trying to speak to someone."
