CLIQ App Secures Major Investment to Expand Its Fight Against Urban Loneliness
The innovative community networking application CLIQ has successfully closed a significant seven-figure investment round, marking a pivotal milestone in its mission to connect people and combat isolation in bustling cities. Founded by Nicola Gunby and Jason Iliffe in February 2023, the platform has rapidly grown into one of the United Kingdom's fastest-expanding social networks, enabling users to join running clubs, network with fellow entrepreneurs, and discover exclusive pop-up concerts at secret venues.
From Personal Frustration to Global Solution
After relocating to London following a stint in Australia, co-founders Gunby and Iliffe experienced firsthand the challenges of building a social circle in one of the world's most populous metropolitan areas. Dissatisfied with existing options for meaningful connections, they developed CLIQ as a direct response to the pervasive issue of urban loneliness. In an interview, Gunby explained, "It started with the question of how people meet people. We realized that while dating apps and outdated Facebook groups exist, no one has truly reinvented social platforms for active, real-world interactions."
Investment and Growth Trajectory
The latest undisclosed seven-figure funding round was spearheaded by the global venture fund Artesian, with participation from angel investors and a family office. This follows CLIQ's earlier pre-seed round of £530,000 in 2024, which established the foundation for the platform's upward trajectory. Remarkably, the app has achieved its rapid growth without allocating any budget to traditional marketing efforts, relying instead on organic community-driven outreach and word-of-mouth promotion.
Gunby attributes this success to a business model where communities actively contribute to user acquisition through social media engagement and influencer collaborations. She noted, "Our strategy has always been to identify the largest communities in each city, onboard them, and let them bring their users. This has led to over 500,000 tickets sold on the app to date, with partnerships including major brands like Gymshark, L'Oreal, and Samsung."
International Expansion and Product Development
The newly secured investment will primarily support CLIQ's international expansion, with a strong focus on Australia, where the app gained viral traction on TikTok, resulting in a surge of downloads. Gunby stated, "We've hired a dedicated manager in Australia because we believe we can dominate that market." Additional expansion targets include Barcelona and Milan, where the platform is already gaining momentum.
Funds will also be directed toward product development, incorporating artificial intelligence to deliver personalized recommendations and enhance safety features. Unlike many social platforms, CLIQ mandates user verification and empowers community owners to establish rules and restrict access based on specific criteria, ensuring a secure and tailored experience.
Future Outlook and Mission
As CLIQ continues its global growth, Gunby and Iliffe are refining the brand identity and seeking office space in London to further their mission of bringing communities together offline. Gunby emphasized, "People just want to meet other people." With its unique approach to fostering genuine connections and combating loneliness, CLIQ is poised to redefine social networking in an increasingly digital world.
