Global X Outage: Millions of Users Worldwide Unable to Access Platform
Global X Outage Leaves Millions of Users Unable to Access Platform

Elon Musk's social media platform X experienced a significant global outage on February 16, 2026, leaving millions of users worldwide unable to access the service. The disruption began just after 1pm UK time, according to internet outage tracker Downdetector, and quickly spread across multiple continents.

Global Impact of the X Outage

The outage affected users in numerous countries, with particularly high concentrations of reports coming from several key regions. In the United Kingdom, more than half of the 3,319 affected users reported being completely unable to load the X app. Across the Atlantic, approximately 23,000 people in the United States faced similar access problems, while Japan experienced the most severe impact with well over 45,000 outage reports filed.

Additional countries reporting significant disruption included Canada, Australia, France, and Germany, though users from many other nations also experienced problems accessing the platform. When attempting to access X via computer, many users encountered a website that became stuck on the X logo, occasionally loading only to display an error message reading: 'Something went wrong. Try reloading.'

Technical Challenges and Platform History

Unlike most major social media platforms, X does not maintain a public health status page, making it difficult to determine the exact cause of the blackout. Interestingly, the service's developers platform for app-makers continued to report that 'All systems are operational' throughout the outage period.

This incident represents the latest in a series of technical problems for the platform formerly known as Twitter. Just last month, tens of thousands of users encountered empty feeds and endless loading screens during another significant outage. That disruption occurred amid global controversy surrounding the platform's in-built AI chatbot, Grok, which had been generating sexualized images of real people.

Previous Outage Patterns

The platform experienced another major outage in November and December when X, Spotify, and dozens of other websites were knocked offline by an issue with Cloudflare. The software company, which helps websites manage internet traffic, suffered a network hiccup that affected multiple services. Notably, Cloudflare's system status webpage currently reports no known major issues.

These recurring outages highlight the technical challenges facing the social media platform as it continues to evolve under Elon Musk's ownership. The global nature of the disruptions demonstrates the platform's widespread reach and the significant impact such outages have on international communication networks.
