Critically Acclaimed Marvel Game Set For Nintendo Switch 2 Revival
A surprising leak from a Taiwanese ratings board has revealed that one of Marvel's most underappreciated video game adaptations is getting a second chance through a native Nintendo Switch 2 port. Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy, the 2021 action-adventure title that won Best Narrative at The Game Awards despite poor sales, appears to be heading to Nintendo's next-generation console.
From Critical Darling To Commercial Disappointment
Developed by Eidos-Montréal and published by Square Enix, Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy received widespread critical praise upon its original release. The game was celebrated for its excellent storytelling, witty dialogue, decent combat mechanics, and outstanding soundtrack. However, despite these accolades and winning a prestigious industry award, the title failed to find commercial success in the marketplace.
The game's poor sales contributed to a difficult period for its developers, with Eidos-Montréal being sold to Embracer Group less than a year after the game's release. This corporate restructuring was partly influenced by the simultaneous commercial failure of Marvel's Avengers from sister studio Crystal Dynamics, creating a challenging environment for Marvel gaming projects outside of Insomniac's successful Spider-Man franchise.
The Switch 2 Port Discovery
The new discovery comes from the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee, where a listing for Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy specifically mentions the Nintendo Switch 2 platform. This listing was shared on gaming forum ResetEra and represents concrete evidence that Square Enix is actively working on bringing the game to Nintendo's upcoming console.
This development is particularly significant because the game was previously available on the original Nintendo Switch only as a cloud-based version, which required constant internet connectivity. A native port would eliminate this requirement and potentially offer improved performance and accessibility for Switch 2 owners.
Square Enix's Nintendo Commitment
Square Enix has emerged as a strong supporter of Nintendo's new console, with several high-profile projects already confirmed. The publisher has announced plans to bring Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster, various Dragon Quest remakes, and the upcoming Adventures Of Elliot: The Millenium Tales to the platform.
Industry observers speculate this might not be Square Enix's only Switch 2 port in development. Earlier this year, rumors circulated about a potential Kingdom Hearts collection coming to the console, which currently only exists as a cloud version on the original Switch hardware.
Marvel's Gaming Renaissance
The potential Guardians Of The Galaxy revival comes during what appears to be a significant year for Marvel video games. Two major titles are scheduled for release in 2026: Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls on August 6 and the highly anticipated Marvel's Wolverine on September 15.
While Insomniac's Wolverine project is widely expected to be a commercial success, questions remain about whether Marvel Tōkon can avoid the fate that befell other non-Insomniac Marvel games. The Guardians Of The Galaxy port represents an opportunity to reassess a game that many critics and players believe deserved far greater recognition and commercial success than it initially received.
The native Switch 2 version could introduce the game to an entirely new audience while providing existing fans with a more accessible way to experience what many consider one of Marvel's best narrative-driven gaming experiences outside of the Spider-Man franchise.
