Nintendo Teases Next 3D Mario with Donkey Kong Bananza Clues
Nintendo has dropped subtle hints that the upcoming 3D Mario game will draw inspiration from Donkey Kong Bananza, though it won't directly copy its destructive gameplay mechanics. With the Nintendo Switch 2 now launched, anticipation is building for the next major Super Mario title, expected to fill a gap in the holiday schedule, especially with Pokémon Winds and Waves slated for 2027.
Developer Insights on Game Evolution
At the Game Developers Conference, Kenta Motokura, director of Super Mario Odyssey and producer on Donkey Kong Bananza, shared insights into how elements from the latter might influence the next 3D Mario. He noted a pattern where ideas from previous projects often serve as hints for future developments, similar to the transition from Super Mario Odyssey to Donkey Kong Bananza.
Motokura explained, 'I expect some ideas from Donkey Kong Bananza will provide future hints for our next project.' This suggests a creative overlap, though the exact nature remains unclear. The structural similarity between the two games involves exploring sandbox levels and collecting items like moons or bananas, but Nintendo typically refreshes its formula with each new entry, making it unlikely to reuse this format directly.
Distinguishing Mario and Donkey Kong Gameplay
Motokura emphasized the importance of differentiating the two franchises. He stated that Donkey Kong Bananza's destruction mechanics were designed to highlight what Mario cannot do, such as punching rocks on a large scale. 'We want to find the differences between those two IPs and bring that out as variety for people to enjoy,' he added, indicating that the next 3D Mario will maintain unique gameplay elements rather than incorporating heavy destruction.
This focus on distinction raises questions about the connective tissue between the games. While there is creative overlap in the teams, with key figures like Motokura and director Wataru Tanaka involved in both projects, Nintendo's secretive nature makes it hard to determine if separate teams are working on the next 3D Mario. If a release is planned for 2026, parallel development would be necessary, but details remain scarce.
Future Prospects and Nintendo's Lineup
For now, fans must wait for official announcements, possibly at the next Nintendo Direct. The company's current slate for the Switch 2 includes titles like Yoshi And The Mysterious Book, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, and Splatoon Raiders, but the next 3D Mario remains a highly anticipated mystery. As speculation grows, Motokura's comments suggest development may still be in early stages, adding to the intrigue surrounding this flagship franchise.
