X Battles Massive Scale of Platform Manipulation with 800 Million Account Suspensions

Social media giant X has revealed it suspended a staggering 800 million accounts over a 12-month period as it confronts what it describes as the "massive" scale of attempts to manipulate its platform. The company disclosed these figures while briefing members of parliament about its continuous fight against state-backed campaigns designed to hijack the agenda on its network.

State Actors Identified as Primary Manipulators

During testimony before the foreign affairs committee, X executives identified Russia as the most prolific state actor engaging in platform manipulation, followed by Iran and China. Wifredo Fernández, a government affairs executive at X Corp, stated via video-link that "there are efforts every single day to create inauthentic networks of accounts" targeting the platform.

Fernández emphasized that attempts to manipulate the platform or flood it with spam have not subsided, noting that "several hundred million accounts" were also taken down in the latter part of last year. He expressed confidence that the remaining accounts on X are authentic, despite the ongoing challenges.

Defining Manipulative Behavior

The company defines manipulative accounts as those engaging in "bulk, aggressive or disruptive activity that misleads others and/or disrupts their experience." X categorizes spam as "unsolicited, repeated actions" that affect other accounts, typically involving streams of low-quality content designed to overwhelm genuine discourse.

According to Fernández, Russia specifically sought to undermine the 2024 US presidential election and "stoke division" through coordinated campaigns where large numbers of accounts attempted to "flood the zone" with particular narratives designed to influence public opinion.

Content Moderation Challenges Under Musk's Leadership

X has faced significant criticism regarding its approach to content moderation since Elon Musk acquired the platform in 2022, when it operated under the Twitter brand. In the United Kingdom, for instance, the platform helped spread inflammatory speculation following the Southport stabbings, where three children were murdered by Axel Rudakubana.

Spam accounts have been a particular concern for Musk, who previously cited concerns about account authenticity as one of his primary reasons for attempting to back out of the 2022 takeover. The Tesla chief executive ultimately proceeded with the acquisition despite warnings from legal experts that abandoning the deal would have serious legal consequences.

Ongoing Platform Integrity Efforts

The 800 million suspensions represent accounts that violated X's rules on platform manipulation and spam throughout 2024, though the company did not specify how many of these suspensions related specifically to foreign interference campaigns. This massive takedown operation occurred on a platform that currently boasts approximately 300 million monthly active users worldwide.

X's recent policy announcements include banning users from earning revenue if they post unlabelled AI-generated war videos, reflecting the company's evolving approach to content authenticity and platform integrity in an increasingly complex digital landscape.
