Sir Devonshire Square, the first London hotel from Amsterdam-based Sircle Collection, delivers a stunning example of mid-century modern design executed with panache. Located near Liverpool Street station in east-central London, the hotel features 81 rooms and 14 suites that blend sleek, functional furnishings with thoughtful details. According to Ed Cunningham, News and Features Editor at Time Out UK, the hotel's interior design is a standout, with rooms that inspire home envy.
Rooms: A showcase of mid-century modern style
The rooms at Sir Devonshire Square are meticulously curated, combining soft greens, rich oranges, papery cream lampshades, and various varnished woods. Highlights include curtains resembling Bakerloo moquette, a curved sofa, spindly-legged tables, and grand wooden frames. A favorite spot is the upholstered cubby bench with an amber dimple light. Practical features include effective air conditioning during a heatwave, blackout curtains, a well-stocked minibar, a kettle with Canton teas, a Nespresso machine, and a bathroom with a tub and bath salts. The bed is described as vast and plush, and the TV bracket can be adjusted to face the bed, cubby, or sofa.
Facilities: Minimalist but with perks
Beyond the rooms, the hotel offers a ground-floor bar and lounge that serves as an all-day small plates eatery. Reception sells local products like Two Tribes beers and Silverhand wines. Guests receive complimentary access to 24N Fitness, a 11,000-square-foot gym around the corner. A private members' club called The Cover was not yet open at the time of the review. Staff are noted as exceedingly friendly and helpful.
Food and dining: Casual but flavorful
The dining area's design is less impressive, with a confusing clash of furniture styles, but the food is dependable. Breakfast highlights include tangy orange juice and avocado on toast with poached eggs. The à la carte dinner menu features silky hummus with salty mushrooms. The vibe is casual, and the flavors are well-executed.
Location: Prime spot in Devonshire Square
The hotel is a minute's walk from Liverpool Street station, providing excellent connectivity via the Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan, Elizabeth, and Weaver lines, as well as Greater Anglia and Stansted Express services. It is also within walking distance to Shoreditch and Spitalfields Market. The hotel sits within the recently developed Devonshire Square, a peaceful courtyard with public art, shared workspaces, and outlets like Cinnamon Kitchen, Lucky Voice, and Story Coffee. The area was once warehouses owned by the East India Company and now hosts events like SXSW London.
