Hypha Gallery South Bank, a major contemporary arts venue, debuts in Bankside this week, transforming the ground floor of a vacant office building on Southwark Bridge Road. Opening June 25, the space is minutes from Tate Modern and could rival the iconic power station gallery.
Space and Studios
Arts charity Hypha Studios, which repurposes vacant buildings for art, runs the project. It features nearly 800 square metres of galleries and over 400 square metres of studio space, making it the charity's largest venue to date. Initially, 17 makers will use the on-site studios for free.
Free Exhibitions
All exhibitions are free. The debut shows include: Bridging the Gap, sculptures inspired by Southwark Bridge; a site-specific exhibit on local histories shaping Southwark's future; and an immersive audio experience where visitors listen to sounds made by microbes and fungi.
Hypha Studios, founded in 2021, has transformed around 70 disused buildings into free spaces across the UK. The Southwark Bridge Road space will be available for one year.
