V&A East Museum Launches in Stratford This Weekend
After a decade-long development, the V&A East Museum is set to open its doors in Stratford on Saturday, April 18, 2026. This new cultural institution represents a significant expansion for the Victoria and Albert Museum, building on its recent projects like the Young V&A in Bethnal Green and the acclaimed V&A East Storehouse.
A Legacy of the Olympic Games
Originally conceived in 2016 as part of the Olympic legacy plans, the V&A East Museum is located at East Bank, 107 Carpenters Rd, within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Its main entrance on Aquatic Walk is easily accessible, just an 8-minute walk from Hackney Wick Overground station, 17 minutes from Stratford International, or a 20-minute stroll from Stratford station. Visitors can also reach it by bus, with the 388 stopping outside Here East, or by cycling via the park's bike lanes.
Inaugural Exhibition: The Music is Black: A British Story
Kicking off the museum's calendar is The Music is Black: A British Story, an exhibition that explores how Black British music has shaped British culture over 125 years. Featuring more than 200 objects, the show includes items like Winifred Atwell's piano, Joan Armatrading's childhood guitar, and the Nintendo used by Jme in his early music experiments. The exhibition also highlights iconic fashion looks, with clothing worn by artists such as Little Simz, Dame Shirley Bassey, Skin, and Sade.
Events and Admission Details
In addition to the exhibition, the V&A East Museum will host events like a talk on The Visual Cultures of Black British Music on April 23 and an experimental vocal event by NYX on April 25. Admission to the museum is free, though some exhibitions and events require separate tickets. For instance, weekday tickets for the inaugural exhibition cost £22.50, rising to £24.50 on weekends.
This opening underscores the V&A's commitment to engaging with east London's heritage and involving young people in its development, making it a must-visit destination for culture enthusiasts in 2026.
