Alison Hammond Clarifies Position on Strictly Come Dancing Hosting Role
Alison Hammond has directly addressed swirling rumors about her potential involvement as a host for the BBC's flagship reality series Strictly Come Dancing. This clarification comes after recent speculation suggested she had declined the opportunity, which she now firmly denies.
Background of the Hosting Speculation
Since Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly announced their departure from Strictly Come Dancing last year, television circles have been abuzz with potential replacements. Names floated have included prominent British presenters such as Alan Carr and Alex Jones, with Alison Hammond naturally entering the conversation given her status as a beloved national television personality.
Earlier this week, Hammond mentioned in an interview with Radio Times that she had been approached about the Strictly hosting position but expressed uncertainty about fitting it into her schedule. "I'm so busy, babes, that I'm not sure it's going to happen. It's unrealistic," she stated at the time, adding "What would I drop, to do Strictly?"
The Clarification Emerges
The situation took a new turn during a recent interview with Metro at the launch of her new Channel 4 series "Your Song." When questioned about reportedly "turning down" the Strictly hosting gig, Hammond was quick to correct the record.
"Do you think I would turn down Strictly if Strictly came along? Who would turn down Strictly! They'd be absolutely crazy," Hammond declared emphatically. She explained her previous comments were strategic: "I was trying to back them off because ultimately everyone keeps putting my name in the mix and they're ruining my chances of even getting on to Strictly."
Hammond made her enthusiasm for the position unmistakably clear: "I'm not too busy, I'm fitter than I've ever been before. I can do Strictly. I can do it all. Let's put that on the record."
Current Television Commitments
While the Strictly Come Dancing hosting situation remains unresolved, Hammond is currently focused on her new Channel 4 project. "Your Song" follows aspiring singers across the country as they perform songs with personal significance, with Hammond serving as host alongside Sam Ryder and with Paloma Faith as a series mentor.
Hammond explained her immediate decision to join the Channel 4 program: "It was about the people. It was all about something that was authentic, something that felt real. As soon as I heard the concept of it, I was like: 'I am in.'"
She emphasized the show's care for contributors as particularly appealing: "The duty of care was there, and I just felt I've got to do this, and I'm the person to do it. I love people. I love singing. I love dancing as well. But ultimately, it was the show for me. I just loved it."
What This Means for Strictly Come Dancing
Hammond's clarification leaves the door wide open for potential future involvement with Strictly Come Dancing. As a former celebrity contestant on the show, she brings both experience and evident enthusiasm to the hosting conversation.
The television presenter's candid remarks suggest she remains very much in consideration for the coveted role, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise. Her public affirmation of interest may influence BBC decision-makers as they continue their search for Winkleman and Daly's replacements.
"Your Song" premieres this Sunday at 9pm on Channel 4, while the Strictly Come Dancing hosting situation continues to develop behind the scenes at the BBC.
