The BBC has unveiled plans to commemorate Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday with a spectacular week-long programming event, featuring three brand-new shows alongside beloved classics from the legendary broadcaster's extensive career. This special celebration, set for May 8, aims to honor what the BBC describes as an "extraordinary milestone" for Sir David, whose work has profoundly influenced global perceptions of the natural world.
New Programmes Highlight Attenborough's Legacy
Among the new offerings, Making Life on Earth: Attenborough's Greatest Adventure will provide an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the iconic BBC One series Life on Earth, which originally aired in 1979. This documentary will delve into Sir David's journey to 40 countries to film 600 species, featuring fresh interviews with the broadcaster and the original production team. They will reflect on the challenges faced during filming, including a coup in the Comoros, being shot at, and Sir David's memorable encounter with gorillas in Rwanda.
Additionally, Sir David will star in Secret Garden, a new series that explores the hidden ecosystems within Britain's gardens. Over five episodes filmed across the UK, the show will showcase the rich biodiversity found in back gardens and offer insights into how the public can contribute to conserving struggling species. Another highlight is David Attenborough's 100 Years on Planet Earth, a live event at the Royal Albert Hall featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra and special guests, promising a grand tribute to his century of life and work.
