Bruno Tonioli's Departure from Britain's Got Talent Explained
The 2026 season of Britain's Got Talent premieres tonight with a significant change on the judging panel. Bruno Tonioli, who joined the ITV reality competition in 2023, has officially stepped down from his role after three seasons with the show.
Scheduling Conflict Forces Exit
In a statement to his followers, Tonioli confirmed that his departure stems directly from scheduling conflicts with his long-running commitment to Dancing With The Stars in the United States. The professional dancer has been involved with the American competition series since 2005, creating an impossible juggling act between the two major television productions.
'After three incredible series, I've sadly had to walk away from a job which has opened my eyes to so much incredible talent and step down as a judge on BGT,' Tonioli stated. 'Whilst I look forward to filming a new series of Dancing with the Stars in the US, I will miss the chaos and joy that BGT brings.'
KSI Steps In as Permanent Replacement
Taking Tonioli's place on a permanent basis is musician, YouTuber, and former professional boxer KSI, who previously appeared as a guest judge during the 2025 season. The social media personality, whose YouTube channel boasts over 25 million subscribers, expressed enthusiasm about his new role.
'I'm so grateful and happy to be a part of the Britain's Got Talent team for another season,' KSI announced. 'I had such a good time last year, and I can't wait to see some more top talent. I'm full of energy, ready to go, and can't wait to make this the most entertaining BGT season ever.'
History of Transatlantic Challenges
This departure echoes Tonioli's earlier exit from Strictly Come Dancing, where balancing commitments on both sides of the Atlantic proved increasingly difficult. The 69-year-old dancer had previously told the Daily Mail about the exhausting travel schedule: 'I just couldn't do the flying anymore. I don't know how I survived that schedule. To be honest, it's a miracle.'
The scheduling clash became particularly acute this year when Britain's Got Talent auditions were rescheduled to autumn, directly conflicting with Dancing With The Stars' September 16 premiere for its 34th season. Last year, producers had attempted to accommodate both shows by having KSI stand in for some auditions while Tonioli traveled to the United States.
Judging Panel Evolution
Tonioli originally joined Britain's Got Talent in 2023, replacing David Walliams on the judging panel alongside Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, and Alesha Dixon. While Holden and Cowell have been with the show since its 2007 inception, and Dixon joined in 2012, Tonioli brought fresh energy despite never having watched the Ant and Dec-helmed competition before joining.
His replacement, KSI, has already demonstrated his judging capabilities during his guest appearances. Notably, his golden buzzer recipient, magician Harry Moulding, went on to win the most recent season of the competition.
The production team faces the ongoing challenge of maintaining viewer engagement while refreshing the panel periodically. With KSI's appointment, producers clearly aim to attract younger demographics while maintaining the show's established format.
Britain's Got Talent continues its tradition of showcasing diverse talents while navigating the complex scheduling realities of international television production. As one era ends with Tonioli's departure, another begins with KSI's permanent appointment to the coveted judging position.
