Emmerdale's Ryan Hawley Confirms Major Relationship Obstacle for Robert and Aaron
Emmerdale star Ryan Hawley has confirmed that beloved characters Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle face a monumental challenge in their relationship as the fallout from Moira Dingle's imprisonment threatens to tear them apart. The popular couple, played by Hawley and Danny Miller, reunited last year but have faced continuous turmoil ever since.
The Complicated Backstory
The drama began when Robert's prison husband Kev Townsend arrived in the village, only to leave heartbroken after discovering Robert had reunited with Aaron. Kev returned towards the end of 2025 as part of John Sugden's revenge scheme but ultimately decided against helping endanger the couple and departed once more.
At the start of 2026, Robert found himself blackmailed by Joe Tate, who forced him to hide stolen ID cards from Celia's at Butler's Farm. Joe threatened to show police footage of Victoria Sugden killing her brother if Robert didn't comply. Desperate to protect his sister, Robert followed orders, unaware the cards were stolen by a woman involved in drug dealing, modern slavery, and human trafficking.
The Devastating Consequences
This decision had catastrophic consequences. Because no one can prove Moira Dingle wasn't involved with Celia's crimes, she faces a lengthy prison sentence. Moira has decided to plead guilty in her upcoming hearing, believing this will result in less time behind bars than if she pleaded not guilty.
When Robert discovered this development, he was devastated, knowing his actions contributed to Moira's life falling apart. He had no choice but to confess his secret to Aaron last week. While Aaron promised not to tell anyone, he made it clear he wasn't sure what this betrayal meant for their relationship.
A Relationship Tested to Its Limits
Ryan Hawley discussed the significant challenges facing the couple in a recent interview. 'I think that their relationship is going to be tested by the things that are happening with the farm and with Moira, certainly with Moira, that's a huge obstacle for them that they're going to have to get over,' he revealed. 'And Moira being with Cain and all of that in the Dingle family. So, I don't know how they'll navigate that.'
In this week's episodes, Robert's guilt intensifies when he hears Kyle Winchester express his worries about Moira going to prison. Hawley explained how this affects his character: 'Robert finds Kyle, and he makes a decision off the back of Kyle saying how it's impacted his life, Moira going to prison. And I think Robert really feels that.'
'He feels the weight of the consequences of what he's done, and feels that the only way that he can make things right is by putting himself back in the situation where he'd get charged with tampering with evidence and then have to go to prison.'
A Race Against Time
The drama escalates when Robert and Aaron discover Celia had a storage unit in Hotten that might contain evidence to free Moira. They obtain the key thanks to Marlon Dingle, who remembers seeing it while on the farm with Paddy Kirk.
Hawley described the frantic situation: 'It's a race against time. Moira's going to confess it in the morning, and then they find out, "Oh, it's going to be later on". And so, it's a race to get to this storage facility and get this storage container open that has what they think they need, but whether or not it does, we'll have to wait and see...'
As the clock ticks down, Robert and Aaron must work together to potentially save Moira while navigating the profound trust issues that now threaten their own relationship. Whether they can overcome this monumental obstacle remains to be seen, but Hawley's comments suggest their bond will be tested like never before.
