Two Emmerdale Villagers Interrogated Over Ray Walters Murder in ITVX Release
Emmerdale: Two villagers questioned over Ray's murder

The peaceful facade of Emmerdale village has been shattered by a police investigation, following the death of one of its most notorious residents. Ray Walters (Joe Absolom), a man whose criminal empire spanned drug dealing and human trafficking, has been found dead, leaving a long list of potential suspects in his wake.

Who Wanted Ray Walters Dead?

Ray's reign of terror made him few friends in the Yorkshire Dales. Under the guidance of his ruthless mother, Celia, he operated a sinister operation from Butler's Farm, exploiting vulnerable villagers. His victims included troubled teen April Windsor (Amelia Flanagan) and her boyfriend Dylan, whom he coerced into selling drugs. He also extorted money from April's parents, Marlon Dingle and Rhona Goskirk.

Perhaps most chillingly, Ray manipulated Bear Wolf into forced labour on the farm, leaving his son Paddy Kirk desperately searching for him. With such a lengthy list of enemies, the discovery of Ray's body was hardly a surprise, but it has thrown the village into a state of suspicion and fear.

Laurel Thomas in the Hot Seat

Leading the investigation is the tenacious DS Walsh (Amanda Ryan), who begins her inquiries by focusing on two unexpected villagers. The first is the village's beloved sweetheart, Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy). Laurel was briefly romantically involved with Ray, charmed by his facade before learning the horrifying truth about his criminal activities from Dylan.

When questioned by DS Walsh, Laurel becomes evasive. The officer asks if Ray left any personal belongings at her home, and Laurel claims he did not. However, viewers know this is a lie. At Christmas, Ray gifted Laurel an expensive bracelet, a token she was seen fiddling with guiltily after his death was revealed. Has this pillar of the community just lied to the police?

Jai Sharma's Incriminating Situation

Things look even more dire for Jai Sharma, Laurel's ex-husband. His protestations of innocence face a major hurdle: Ray's body was discovered in the back of Jai's van during the explosive Corriedale events. DS Walsh marches him to the police station for a rigorous interrogation.

In the interview room, DS Walsh presents a compelling theory. She suggests Jai may still carry a torch for Laurel and could have killed Ray to protect her from the monster he had become. Not stopping there, she goes further, proposing that Laurel and Jai may have conspired together to commit the murder. Jai denies everything, but the evidence against him is mounting.

What Happens Next in Emmerdale?

The early release of this episode on ITVX, dated January 15, 2026, offers a gripping preview of the turmoil to come on ITV1. With DS Walsh doggedly pursuing the truth, and both Laurel and Jai hiding secrets, the question of who killed Ray Walters is far from solved. Were Walsh's suspicions correct? Did a desire for protection or revenge drive two of Emmerdale's most upstanding residents to commit the ultimate crime? The investigation is only just beginning, and more shocking revelations are sure to follow.
