ITV's Soap Schedule Faces Further Interruptions with Sports Broadcasts
Soap enthusiasts are facing yet another disappointment as ITV has announced the cancellation of Coronation Street and Emmerdale for Friday, March 6, 2026. This disruption is due to live coverage of the 2026 Guinness Men's Six Nations rugby match between Wales and Ireland, airing from the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The move is set to further irritate loyal viewers who have already experienced multiple schedule changes since the introduction of the new 'power hour' format.
Details of the Latest Cancellation
The new transmission pattern, which began earlier this year, features Emmerdale from 8:00 to 8:30 PM and Coronation Street from 8:30 to 9:00 PM. However, this week's schedule will see both soaps pulled to accommodate the rugby clash. Regular programming is expected to resume on Monday, March 9, with episodes available for streaming on ITVX and YouTube prior to their ITV1 broadcast.
Previous Disruptions to the Soap Lineup
This is not the first time sports events have overridden the soap schedule. Just one week after the new pattern launched, coverage of the Newcastle United versus Manchester City football game on January 13 led to cancellations. Additionally, in early February, both soaps were removed for two nights: on February 3 due to the Arsenal versus Chelsea match, and on February 5 because of a Six Nations game between France and Ireland.
Social media has been abuzz with fan discontent. One viewer expressed frustration, stating, 'I am fed up of soaps being cancelled due to football. Can't they put the games on a dedicated 'free' channel?' Others echoed similar sentiments, with comments like 'This is so painful. There are very few shows that I like to watch but they keep being shunted' and 'This whole new schedule is a ploy to tear our beloved soap episodes away from us.'
Rationale Behind the New Scheduling Pattern
ITV's Managing Director of Media and Entertainment, Kevin Lygo, previously explained that the new commissioning pattern is viewer-led. He emphasized that the network aims to present soaps in a more digestible format, with 30-minute episodes designed to meet changing viewing habits. Lygo noted, 'In a world where there is so much competition for viewers' time and attention, and viewing habits continue to change, we believe this is the right amount of episodes that fans can fit into their viewing schedule.'
Research indicated that 30-minute episodes achieve higher viewing figures compared to hour-long counterparts, aligning with viewer preferences for pacey storytelling. Lygo added, 'Streaming-friendly, 30 minute episodes better provide the opportunity to meet viewer expectations for storyline pace, pay-off and resolution.' Despite the growth of ITVX, a significant portion of the audience still watches via the traditional schedule, making this adjustment crucial for maintaining engagement.
The ongoing disruptions highlight the challenges ITV faces in balancing sports coverage with regular soap programming, as fans continue to voice their dissatisfaction with the frequent changes.
