One of Coronation Street's most enduring stars has confirmed his future on the cobbles is secure, despite the impending carnage of the historic Corriedale crossover event. Michael Le Vell, who has played mechanic Kevin Webster since 1983, has signed a new contract with the ITV soap.
New Deal for Weatherfield Stalwart
In an exclusive interview, the actor revealed his relief at being offered a fresh deal, keeping him in Weatherfield for at least another year. His previous contract was due to expire in January 2026. Le Vell, whose tenure is second only to William Roache's iconic Ken Barlow, acknowledged the ever-present uncertainty of soap life, stating that actors can never take their roles for granted.
'You can never look beyond that,' he said, reflecting on the possibility that writers could eventually run out of ideas for his character. 'They might say 'you know what, we can't write for you... Thank you and goodbye.'' Despite his 42-year history on the show, the actor admitted he still suffers from nerves before filming, particularly when sharing scenes with legends like Bill Roache or Barbara Knox, or during big scenes in the Rovers Return.
Surviving the Corriedale Carnage
With the monumental Corriedale episode promising a high death toll as the worlds of Coronation Street and Emmerdale collide, fans had feared for Kevin's safety. However, this new contract confirmation strongly suggests the mechanic will survive the crossover chaos. Le Vell described being part of the event as a 'great privilege' and an honour.
He shared behind-the-scenes details of filming, highlighting the camaraderie between the two soap casts during night shoots. 'Our trailers were next to each other, so the casts of the two shows were always having a cup of tea and a chat,' he recalled. One of his scenes involved working with Emmerdale's Jeff Hordley (Cain Dingle) and Danny Miller (Aaron Dingle) to move a crashed car.
Future Romances: Sally or Abi?
Looking ahead, the conversation turned to Kevin's tangled love life. When asked about a potential reunion with his ex-wife Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor), Le Vell was definitive. 'I always say no,' he stated, explaining that he loves the current dynamic of Sally's marriage to Tim and wouldn't want to see it split.
Instead, the actor expressed a desire for Kevin to reconcile with his more recent ex, Abi Webster (played by Sally Carman-Duttine). 'I'd get back with Abi, because I love working with Sally Carman,' he said, though he conceded that such a storyline is not currently on the cards for 2026. For now, Kevin Webster remains a fixture on the Street, with his future secured for another dramatic year.
