Scott Mills Breaks Silence Following BBC Dismissal
Former BBC Radio 2 presenter Scott Mills has publicly addressed his recent termination from the broadcaster, confirming in a detailed statement that he was investigated by police over a historic sexual offence allegation. The 53-year-old host was abruptly fired this week amid swirling rumours regarding his personal conduct, specifically allegations connected to a relationship dating back over a decade.
Statement Confirms Police Investigation
In his first public comments since the dismissal, Mills acknowledged that the Metropolitan Police had issued a statement pertaining to him. He revealed that an allegation was made against him in 2016 concerning a historic sexual offence, which prompted a police investigation. Mills stated he fully cooperated with authorities during this process in 2018.
The evidence file was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which ultimately determined that the evidential threshold was insufficient to bring formal charges. Mills emphasized that the allegation dates back nearly three decades, and the police investigation concluded seven years ago.
Appeal for Privacy and Media Respect
Expressing a desire for closure, Mills appealed to the public and media to respect his wish for no further public commentary on the matter. He highlighted the considerable passage of time since the alleged incident and the subsequent investigation's closure as reasons for this request.
"Since the investigation related to an allegation that dates back nearly 30 years and the police investigation was closed 7 years ago, I hope that the public and the media will understand and respect my wish not to make any further public comment on this matter," Mills stated.
Gratitude Amidst Controversy
Concluding his statement, Mills extended heartfelt thanks to those who have shown him support during this challenging period. He specifically mentioned his former colleagues and loyal listeners, whom he expressed missing greatly. "I wish to thank from the bottom of my heart all those who have reached out to me with kindness, my former colleagues, and my beloved listeners, who I greatly miss," he said.
The BBC has previously indicated that it obtained new information about Mills in the weeks leading up to his sacking, though specific details remain undisclosed. The situation has sparked significant media attention and public speculation, with fellow broadcasters like Richard Bacon and Jeremy Vine commenting on the matter.
