The Traitors fans spot major flaw in Secret Traitor twist after New Year's Day reveal
The Traitors fans spot flaw in new Secret Traitor twist

The hit BBC psychological game show The Traitors returned with a bang on New Year's Day, introducing a major new twist that has already sparked intense speculation among its dedicated fanbase.

Host Claudia Winkleman unveiled the new rules in the first episode of the latest series, which aired on 1st January 2026. Alongside the three Traitors chosen in front of viewers – Stephen, Rachel, and Hugo – a fourth, Secret Traitor was also recruited, their identity hidden from both the other Traitors and the audience at home.

The Mechanics of the Secret Traitor

Claudia explained the new gameplay to the Traitors' conclave during their first turret meeting. The Secret Traitor will be tasked with compiling a shortlist of potential murder targets each night, with one crucial caveat: their own name cannot appear on it.

This fresh layer of deception, however, has led many sharp-eyed viewers to predict a potential flaw. Fans quickly took to social media platform X as the episode aired, suggesting the shortlists could become a tool for the main Traitors to unmask their secret colleague.

Viewers Predict an Easy Solve

One fan, Isabelle, pointed out the logical pitfall: ‘Surely after time the Traitors might be able to work out who the secret one is based off the fact the secret Traitor won’t put their name on the shortlist.’

Another viewer, Ella, agreed, noting that the speed of discovery would depend on how many names feature on each nightly list. The first shortlist contained just three names. Siobhan echoed the sentiment, tweeting: ‘I actually wish they hadn’t told the other Traitors that there’s a secret Traitor... They’ll be looking at the murder lists trying to figure out who it is and they’ll be able to narrow it down quite quickly.’

The twist has also become a puzzle for the audience at home. Grace stated: ‘I’m definitely going to make notes on who’s on the shortlist each night to narrow it down.’ Wendy shared her elaborate plan: ‘I’m putting a whiteboard up in my hotel room at that castle and keeping detailed notes of who’s on that shortlist every single night.’

A New Cast of Deceivers

The 22-strong cast for this series promises intriguing dynamics around the roundtable. It includes a crime writer, a retired police detective, and a psychologist, all skilled in reading behaviour. They are joined by a barrister and a poker-playing gardener, as a new batch of Faithfuls attempt to weed out the murderous Traitors in their midst on the BBC juggernaut.

Described as ‘the ultimate psychological game of deception’, the show's editing may now play an even more crucial role in who viewers suspect, adding another meta-layer to the gameplay.

The Traitors continues on Friday night at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
