Last One Laughing Season 2 Review: Hilarious Show Marred by Jimmy Carr's Overbearing Role
Last One Laughing Review: Jimmy Carr's Role Sparks Frustration

Last One Laughing Season 2 Delivers Laughs but Host Jimmy Carr Grates on Nerves

The anticipation for new episodes of Last One Laughing UK was almost unbearable. The first three episodes of season two were nothing short of sensational, offering absurd humor at its finest with non-stop belly laughs. This light-hearted comedy provided the perfect escape many viewers desperately needed.

While part of me wished I could binge the entire season in one sitting, I appreciated having time to recommend the show to friends who hadn't yet discovered it. I was genuinely surprised by how many people in my circle remained unaware of this hilarious series.

Episodes Four and Five Arrive with Mixed Reactions

A week later, episodes four and five finally dropped. These installments deliver gut-busting laughter, though one particularly disgusting moment courtesy of national treasure Mel Giedroyc might induce some nausea alongside the giggles.

However, there's one aspect of the series that's increasingly becoming frustrating: host Jimmy Carr. He's always been a polarizing figure in comedy, known for years of television appearances and his dynamic chemistry with Sean Lock and Jon Richardson on 8 Out of 10 Cats.

Controversial comedy boundaries have become a hallmark of Carr's career, particularly his 2021 Netflix special that featured incendiary remarks about the Holocaust that sparked widespread backlash. While comedy should push boundaries, there's a fine line between edgy humor and offensive material that comedians shouldn't cross with impunity.

Viewer Frustration with Carr's Hosting Style

Regarding Carr's role on Last One Laughing, many viewers expressed irritation when the first block of season two episodes was released. One fan named Samantha wrote on social media: "Do they do a version where they don't cut to Jimmy Carr going 'Oh, that's a great joke' every five seconds?" This references the frequent camera cuts to Carr in the control room, laughing uncontrollably at contestants' antics.

As the host, Carr naturally warrants significant screen time. His amusing declaration of "Doors!" whenever he enters the main room provides some entertainment, and he clearly shares excellent rapport with the other comedians, most of whom he's known personally for years.

Nevertheless, while watching episodes four and five, my frustration with Carr's involvement grew substantially. He transformed from a mere overseer to an active participant affecting the competition's outcome.

Key Details About Last One Laughing Season 2

Cast members alongside co-hosts Jimmy Carr and Roisin Conaty include Alan Carr, Amy Gledhill, reigning champion Bob Mortimer, David Mitchell, Diane Morgan, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Maisie Adam, Mel Giedroyc, Romesh Ranganathan, and Sam Campbell.

Release schedule follows a three-batch pattern: the first three episodes debuted on Thursday March 19, two more episodes arrived on Thursday March 26, and the grand finale will premiere on Thursday April 2.

Future seasons haven't been officially confirmed, but the show's popularity suggests a strong likelihood of renewal for season three.

Questionable Gameplay Interventions

In one particularly controversial moment, a contestant is called to the locker room where they discover Carr's face poking through a hole. The host proceeds to make absurd statements that inevitably cause the comedian to laugh, resulting in their elimination with a red card.

Carr explicitly stated he can change competition rules as he sees fit, and producers likely instructed this intervention. However, this manipulation feels fundamentally unfair. While the game's objective involves comedians trying to make each other laugh (excluding guest stars like Danny Dyer and Richard Madeley), such heavy-handed host interference seems inappropriate.

Despite Frustrations, the Show Remains Compelling

Setting aside Carr's puppet-master tendencies, Last One Laughing continues to deliver absolute comedic chaos. The anticipation for next week's series finale is palpable as several strong contenders have been eliminated, and "joker" performances have evolved from outrageously hilarious to downright surreal.

In my initial review, I highlighted Sam Campbell as a standout performer. He remains the comedian I'm least familiar with in the lineup, yet he continues to be one of my favorites.

Mel Giedroyc deserves special mention for transitioning from brightening evenings on The Great British Bake Off to executing a disgustingly memorable prank on Last One Laughing that might permanently alter cookie consumption habits. Paradoxically, this has only increased admiration for her comedic talents.

Looking Beyond the Current Season

The impending conclusion of season two brings inevitable sadness, but nearly 30 international spin-offs await discovery. Meanwhile, I've been compiling a dream list of comedians for potential season three participation: Russell Howard, Sarah Millican, and television royalty Alison Hammond could elevate the series to even greater heights with the right casting.

Last One Laughing season 2 continues streaming on Amazon Prime Video, with the season finale scheduled for Thursday April 2. The show delivers exceptional comedy despite frustrations with host involvement, maintaining its position as must-watch television for comedy enthusiasts.
