Tamzin Outhwaite Confronts Transphobia with Powerful Personal Message
Former EastEnders actress Tamzin Outhwaite has delivered a heartfelt response to those expressing hateful attitudes toward transgender individuals. The 55-year-old star, best known for her role as Mel Owen in the BBC One soap opera, spoke candidly about her journey as a parent of a transgender child during a recent public appearance.
A Mother's Journey of Understanding and Acceptance
In July 2025, Outhwaite appeared on the popular Parenting Hell podcast hosted by Rob Beckett and Josh Widdicombe, where she openly discussed her family's experience. Her eldest child, Flo, now 17, came out as transgender at approximately 10 or 11 years old. Outhwaite explained the emotional adjustment required when telling people she previously had two daughters but now has a son and a daughter.
'That's quite easy for me to say now, but it wasn't maybe six or seven years ago,' she revealed during the podcast interview. 'The maddest thing is, I suppose, is that it's not the most interesting thing about him. He's an incredibly funny, intelligent boy. And I'm watching him grow into a wonderful human who's very talented. And to see him thriving is just nothing but relief and joy for me, really. Because there were some dark times.'
Family Therapy and Personal Growth
The actress acknowledged that family therapy sessions played a crucial role in helping her understand what Flo was experiencing. 'Now we're in a really wonderful place as a family. Flo is in a wonderful place as a brilliant actor, singer, writer, and director in his sixth form at school. And Marnie is thriving,' Outhwaite said with evident pride. 'So instead of just trying to get through difficult times, we are now all thriving. And the relief and the joy is very tangible. It's lovely. Flo is an incredible actor and he's desperate to be a writer, a comedy writer.'
Direct Message to Transphobes at British Diversity Awards
This week, Outhwaite attended the prestigious British Diversity Awards at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House hotel in London. During an interview with BANG Showbiz, she delivered a direct message to those who harbor transphobic attitudes.
'Before people judge, you don't know the journey that the person has been on to get where they are. I don't have to explain that but it wasn't short, it's a long process before someone actually speaks about it for the first time,' Outhwaite stated emphatically. 'Every journey is completely different, so I think it's really easy to judge, but if it's not actually affecting you, I believe you should not judge, because nothing is easy.'
EastEnders Legacy and Personal Background
Tamzin Outhwaite first appeared on EastEnders as Mel Owen in 1998, becoming involved in numerous dramatic storylines including:
- Abandoning Ian Beale at the altar on their wedding day
- A complex love triangle with Walford characters Phil Mitchell and Steve Owen
- Marrying Steve Owen and having a child with him
After leaving the show in 2002, Outhwaite returned to EastEnders in 2018 for a second stint that concluded tragically in 2019 when her character took her own life following the death of her son Hunter. The actress shares her two children with ex-husband Tom Ellis, known for his roles in popular television series including Luther and Miranda.
Outhwaite's public discussion of her family's journey represents a significant contribution to the ongoing conversation about transgender rights and acceptance in contemporary society. Her message emphasizes the importance of empathy and understanding when approaching topics of gender identity and personal transformation.
