For a professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing, the spotlight often shines on glittering trophies and perfect scores. But for Aljaž Škorjanec, one of the show's most memorable moments remains an awkward costume malfunction that occurred over a decade ago.
The Moment That Won't Be Forgotten
Appearing on the BBC's It Takes Two, Škorjanec admitted that while he has celebrated many highs, including winning the Glitterball Trophy with Abbey Clancy in 2013, it is a single mishap that the public most frequently recalls. 'The most amount of times that people have stopped me, has been [about] the moment with Alison Hammond when that dress went over my head,' he confessed.
The incident took place during the Halloween Week dance-off in 2014. Paired with This Morning presenter Alison Hammond, Škorjanec was performing a routine to Kate Bush's 'Wuthering Heights' when the flowing sleeve of Hammond's dress accidentally covered his face mid-dance.
Laughter Through the Embarrassment
The professional dancer recalled that the aftermath was filled with infectious laughter. 'Once we finished dancing that dance-off, Alison burst into laughter that lasted about ten minutes. You can’t help but laugh with her,' he said, adding a heartfelt, 'Thank you for making me laugh, every single day.'
Despite the passage of 11 years, fans of the hit BBC show continue to remind Škorjanec of the hilarious faux-pas, proving that sometimes the most human moments resonate more than the most technically perfect performances.
A Bittersweet 2025 Series
This year, Aljaž Škorjanec returned to the Strictly ballroom, partnered with Drag Race UK star La Voix. Their journey, however, was cut short just before the coveted Blackpool special week. Initially, La Voix was granted a bye due to an injury, but following further medical advice, the pair were forced to withdraw completely from the competition.
Hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman delivered the sad news to viewers, confirming the withdrawal. The pair will, however, return to dance with the rest of the 2025 cast, except for Thomas Skinner, in the grand final.
The Strictly Come Dancing 2025 final airs on BBC One at 7pm on Saturday, December 20.
