There’s nothing worse than waking up to an unexpected breakout of spots, especially ahead of a significant event like a wedding or job interview. Dealing with angry, red, inflamed, and often sore blemishes is something I have extensive experience with, thanks to hormonal acne. From whiteheads to blackheads, cysts to papules, I’ve encountered and managed them all throughout my life.

However, as a beauty journalist, I frequently test products and determine what’s truly worth your investment, making spot treatments one of my areas of expertise. My most crucial advice? If you’re acne-prone like me, avoid overcomplicating your skincare routine with countless products. Instead, maintain simplicity: adhere to a gentle cleanser, a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer, and, of course, daily sunscreen.

Then, when a breakout occurs, introduce a spot treatment into your regimen and practice patience. Fortunately for you, I have compiled a small yet powerful selection of spot treatment products that genuinely deliver results, from beloved brands such as The Ordinary, Byoma, and Paula’s Choice.

Byoma Blemish Clearing Paste

In 2025, Byoma launched a dedicated blemish range, featuring a cleanser, face mist, moisturizer, and this standout product. Its clearing paste excels at addressing the red ring that makes spots particularly noticeable. Don’t be deterred by the idea of applying a paste to your skin; this creamy formula contains salicylic acid to unclog pores, kaolin clay to absorb excess oil and sebum, and camphor and kojic acid to prevent dryness and post-blemish marks.

While it initially appears as a peachy grey color, this vanishes once blended, immediately reducing visible redness. It also offers a texture-smoothing, matte finish, making it easier to conceal with makeup. I absolutely adore this product – you only need a tiny amount per spot, and despite often handling multiple breakouts simultaneously, it has lasted me for months.

Purifide By Acnecide Power Pimple Patches x36

Sometimes, resisting the urge to squeeze spots is impossible. This habit typically worsens the situation rather than helping. As someone also guilty of this, the optimal solution is these spot patches. A pack contains 36 patches, which will last a considerable time, and they are ideal for both preventing touching and accelerating healing.

Each patch includes salicylic acid, centella asiatica, and Canadian willowherb, which not only unclog pores but also soothe inflammation simultaneously. I appreciate that they come in two different sizes, are very discreet, and feature strong adhesive that keeps them in place without sliding, yet leaves no marks upon removal. Apply them to a clean, dry face and leave for up to six hours. When working from home, I always have at least one on.

The Ordinary Sulfur 10% Powder-to-Cream Concentrate

I would be negligent not to mention this innovative spot treatment from The Ordinary. It’s a clever white powder that, when gently applied to a spot, blends into an invisible, matte cream, immediately minimizing the shiny head some blemishes exhibit. Containing 10% sulfur, it absorbs excess oil and calms redness, leading to almost immediate improvement in breakouts.

Even with my sensitive skin, I can apply this multiple times daily without any irritation. It represents an excellent beauty bargain.

Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Exfoliating Toner

A cult beauty product for good reason, this exfoliating toner serves as a great first line of defense against persistent spots. Like most items on my list, it contains salicylic acid – one of the most effective ingredients for blemishes – and is designed to be applied with a soaked cotton pad.

I prefer to sweep it across my T-zone a couple of days per week, as that’s where I experience the most oiliness, blackheads, and cysts. It essentially works by sloughing off dead skin cells and the sebum that clogs pores and causes spots. It is available in larger sizes, but if you’ve never tried it before, I recommend starting with the smaller 30ml bottle to assess its effectiveness.

COSRX Master Patch X-Large

These are the heavy-duty option when managing multiple breakouts in the same area without frustration. Each patch is extra-large, covering a broader area and treating all blemishes simultaneously. Larger cysts or whiteheads almost exclusively appear on my chin, and I find this more economical than using multiple smaller patches.

They are hydrocolloid patches, meaning they absorb excess fluid like oil and sebum from within spots and help reduce swelling. I typically wear them overnight or when working from home, as their size makes them less discreet. After a minimum of six hours, upon removal, my spots have decreased in size, are less red, and are easier to conceal with makeup.
